Giving Away Things

My sister is visiting and at the same time, she is helping me to downsize a bit. It is a lot easier to do those things with another person as we talk at the same time and time flies. When doing those sorts of things alone, I find it very depressing. I am trying to get rid of a lot of dishes, books, games, little knick knacks, dishes, cd's and DVD's. Plus clothing still in good shape but not interested in it anymore. We have a big house, so lots of work to do. Of course, when it is too hot, we put the A/C on, no suffering from the heat around here!.

It IS more fun to do that kind of thing with someone else. And I also find that conversation flows better when you're doing something else. Awkward pauses are never awkward.

Agree with you that it is a lot more fun to do something tedious or boring with someone with who we get along so well.

So do I. I have so much stuff here that hasn't been touched in over two years.

Most of us tend to accumulate a vast amount of surplus items over time, so every now and then have a purge on clearing them out. As we all know, it can be quite a formidable task.

@marlina I am often amazed at how much I have accumulated over the time.

@Asylum Same here, why do we buy all that stuff in the first place?

You are right, it's a lot easier to go through things to donate while talking with someone. I have plenty of clothes, shoes, glasses, cups and dishes that we do not need. I feel it's time to get rid of them.

@LadyDuck This morning, my sister and I did more bags for giving away and after lunch will bring them to the place for donations.

As we get older, we need less and less things to take care of.

@marlina I agree, if I could only convince my husband to get rid of plenty of his stuff.

Every time we move(ed) we got rid of stuff. This isn't the smallest or biggest home we've lived in and we still have too much stuff...but I'm fine with it.

We have gotten rid of things too when we moved before, but somehow this house is our biggest one so far and we sure succeeded in filling it up.

it is good you have a help when doing this things. It is easier when another person is around to help you downsize especially those who are not in touch to the things you may want to get rid of.

We did that last summer when we were thinking of moving. It was hard, but it also felt good to get rid of some of the stuff we never use.

I've done that type of thing myself, but for me it was going through paperwork and throwing away what was no longer needed. It's easier to tackle those projects with a friend than alone for some reason. I was here earlier, but I was eating a popsicle and couldn't type. Then I got side-tracked. Glad you get to spend time with your sister, but has it been warmer there lately? We've had cooler temps for several days this past week.

I don't mind getting rid of things that someone else can use. The problem is that if I have something that is still useful but I can't think of anyone who would want it, I just end up keeping it again rather than throwing it away!

It is nice to give away some items for more space (though your house is big) and for organization.

Getting rid of surplus stuff is hard. My husband and I are still working on it. We've gotten rid of some, but my packrat husband can only handle so much at a time. If it was up to him we would keep everything even if it meant we didn't have room to walk in the house.

My husband is not exactly a packrat but he has difficulty giving away things too. He has tons of books but he did give away the ones that he is sure he doesn't want to reread. Over 1,000 books over the years and we still have too many.

Sounds like a good plan. My daughter keeps giving me things every day she doesn't want anymore. One weekend we will have to have a yard sale so they can sell their things.

We have decided to move the pcs for now to the corner of the living room, clear out this room, and start getting rid of carpet, once it's up, a treatment of clue then laminate will go down. Then we move the bed into here and do another room. During that I hope to get rid of some stuff!
