Ana and I worked together for six years until I left the company and moved away 12 years ago. It's hard to believe I've been gone from that company for twice as long as I was there as it still look back with great affection for that job and the lovely people I worked with there. Ana was there before me and long outstayed me - clocking up a total of 24 years before getting unceremoniously 'dumped' by them back at Christmastime. She's not bitter - they'd been good to her - but both she and the company had moved on and it was time to go.
She lives a good two hours drive from here and I'm now waiting for her to arrive for the weekend. I've made up the spare room (cleared up the cat hair on the bed and remade it with nice fresh linens), checked there are lots of goodies in the bathroom and left a bear on the bed.
The great thing about old friends is that they know what your like. She knows we're untidy and disorganised so I haven't had to panic that the cleaner didn't come this week. I'm particularly excited that she'll meet my cats as she was very fond of their predecessors because she used to stay with us a lot and was always the first one up in the morning to get bullied by the cats into giving them treats.
Tomorrow is a big steam engine and heavy horse event in a village nearby so we'll probably head over there if it's not raining. But mostly I'm just excited to spend some time with her again after so many years.

Oh, old friends who know you inside and out are the best guests!! No need to sweat the small stuff. When I go to Dayton my friend is like that, she is so happy I don't want her to clean for me or do anything special and visa versa. For 30 years we were in and out of each others houses so why start worrying now? Lucky you!!! Have a great time!

i don't mind how the house looks, too. i'm there to see them, not to inspect the house.
