She Said Yes

We were at the surgical clinic in the recovery area with my sister. Both of her daughters were there.
We observed a nice looking youngish nurse doing her job, with a black eye.
My younger niece asked her point blank if she got it practicing karate, and she said yes.
How did my niece know? She and her husband and two kids have done karate forever. She said many of them regard black eyes and bruises as badges of honor as proof that they have done something.
Have you ever had a black eye? I have. . . I ran into a door. Really.
For any who do not know Karate is a form of Marshal Arts or fighting.

I had not thought a lot about it, so it was funny when my niece asked her as she hurried by. I am a wimp, I would not enjoy it.

Ouch, you know I always felt most hurt if my parent accidentally hurt me. Never mind if I was behind them and they could not see, it still almost broke my heart.

That is not fun. Does this mean you have to pay particular attention to that eye even now? It hurts to think of it.

@GardenGerty No, everything healed up really well. I've not even thought about it in years.

I've had two. One in college when I caught an elbow that broke my nose playing basketball. The other one was at my current job. Locking hose coupling for the hose draining fryer oil was stuck and I had the wrong angle on it when it came unstuck. Funniest accident report I ever had to fill out.

I had 2 black eyes after having brain surgery a number of years ago, my eyes were swollen shut for a few days.
My hubby had a skin tag removed from hear his eye once and got a black eye as a result, and although our son took karate, the only black eye that he ever got was from playing flag football in the water at the beach (he slipped and fell) and not from karate.

Yes, trauma to the head, like surgery. I am glad that they did that surgery and you are here to be our friend.

I've had too many black eyes @GardenGerty and it was from a husband who was a black belt in karate. He apparently thought they were badges of honor too.

That is good. It means you probably have not had too many head injuries or none that were severe.
