Oh , Those Abbreviations !

Yesterday , while we were eating dinner and also watching the news on tv , the reporter mentioned the word Endo . The aunt of my husband from the US , asked us what Endo is . And I told her End of Contract .
Thus, she said she hates it that here in the Philippines , people keeps talking like that , not pronouncing it in full .
My husband then asked me “what does " lol " means , as I see a lot of it in FB comments?" . I laughingly told “ you don’t know until now?” and he said no . So I told him that it’s the abbreviation for laughing out loud .
He laughed out loud and said that he thought it means “ Ulol “ , which is the Tagalog for stupid . And we all laughed out loud .
So I informed them also that ATM , means at the moment , BRB , means be right back , that BTW , means by the way and OMG , means Oh my God !
Guys , can you add to these words , so I can also teach them at home what they mean and be updated about all these abbreviations .
ATM , that’s Mayon Volcano today , on a gloomy day . BRB .

@Lucky15 wow that's a new one. Added to my pitiable list of 'abbreviation vocabulary'.

This tendency to abbreviate everything has become quite out of these days.It is approaching level of text speak, which is one of my pet hates.
I find the command of English and ability to spell here is depreciating daily, with such shortcuts providing many people with an excuse not to even try to learn.

I think this came to be when the cellphone become a sensation and texting became rampant that in order to save time texting they abbreviate it . As for me , i would already call if what i will be texting will already be lengthy and time consuming .
Indeed , because of this those students of lower grades becomes poor in spelling English words , since this is our second language here i our country .

@SIMPLYD That is exactly when it began. Back in the early days text messages had to be constructed using the dial keys, which was very laborious. People began drifting towards phonetic equivalents such as U2 instead of 'you too'.
Nowadays it is more habitual. Typing out a word in full with a keyboard is not difficult, yet abbreviations are rampant on sites such as Facebook.

Ah the good old sentinel again! But he looks a tad rigid in this one but majestic nonetheless.
About those abbreviations... you know LOL actually meant "lots of love" but later over time came to be used as "laugh out loud". Then we have ROFL- rolling on the floor laughing. I don't use much abbreviations though.

Indeed she still looks so majestic . We think of it as a She because we call her Daragang Magayon , our native tongue for Beautiful Lady .
Anyway , so it actually meant that - lots of love at first . I didn't know that , i just know it means laugh out loud . Yes, there' that ROFL , which is quite exaggerated to use .

@The_Bong_Woman Daraga means lady , while magayon means Beautiful . So it should be Magayong rebel woman . The G is added so it is is referring to rebel_woman . How;s that for a Bicol lesson . ha ha ha

@SIMPLYD Indeed if that is what it means then your username should be daragang_rebel_woman.
haha yes I agree ROFL is a tad too exaggerated.

I also get lost when I read some Tagalog words that are abbreviated .. The Filipinos ruined our national language..

@epiffanie Maybe it's because others are doing their Fb at their mobile phones, so that's why. hahaha

@SIMPLYD one example is "nd" for 'hinde'... there are a few more tagalog words that I can't recall at the moment.. I came across them on Facebook when they leave comments..

@SIMPLYD it was started with computers and then cell phones, what is funny to me is heating people say omg, instead of the words.

Lol is really funny. The first time that I also saw it in Facebook I also thought it as "Ulol". And to think that I felt somewhat angry to the person who included it in her comments.
Personally, I really don't like abbreviating words. It means laziness to me. So when I write something or say something, I always use the complete word.

When I first got on the internet I though lol meant lots of luck. So when someone used it I thought they were signing off with lots of luck. So I would reply something like "lol, bye." It probably really confused people. Well, I was a bit confused when I thought the communicate was just getting started and they were ending it by with lots of luck.
