Wake Up, Get Up, Stay Up

Waking up, getting up and staying up are three different things. You can wake up at 5, but get up at 6. You can wake up at 5, get up and get going, but need a short power nap by 9.
I think the time we wake up doesn't tell the whole story. I think it depends on what we're doing while we're awake and who benefits from them.
For those who are night owls and became early birds, or early birds who became night owls, how did you do it? Was it beneficial for you?

This time here is different from most places - we have daylight 24 hours now, but in a month or more, we'll have dark at night and it should be easier to go to bed early But as I am an night owl, I hang out with the other owls on the Internet far too long..

the philippines is slightly above the equator so we're used to "equal" night and day. i can't imagine 24 hour daylight. does it mean you also sleep less @buenavida?

Is there a part of the year when it's dark almost the whole day long too? I didn't realize your country didn't have dark nights in July.

I'm part of the sleeping elite - meaning, I can be a night owl and at the same time an early bird.
I agree that what is more important are the things that we do in our waking hours. Of course, waking up early is important as well as it adds up to one's waking hours.

Now , i can cope up with my 6 hours of sleep . I take the power nap of 10-15 minutes after lunch and upon waking up drink a small mug of my very cold coffee , which i placed on the freezer two hours before that . On weekends i catch up with the lost sleep by oversleeping .

@hereandthere It depends. Yesterday I took a much needed nap as I didn't get much sleep as I went to bed late and got up early for church. Most times I don't have any trouble falling asleep, but then there are times when it takes seeming hours to do so.

I usually wake up at 4, sometimes earlier than that. The moment I wake up, I get up right away and brush my teeth and wash my face and prepare for the early morning walk. I sleep at 9 or even 8:30 sometimes. I could stay up as late as 11:30. Before i could stay as late as 1AM but still wake up at 6 or earlier.

you walk on an empty stomach? breakfast is my first thought of the day!
i guess staying up late and waking up early was when you were still working at the bank?

@hereandthere When I was still working I'd sleep at 11 or past that and wake up at 5 to go to the bank to print reports early, come home to conduct my daughters to school and after that, take a shower, have breakfast and go to the office before 8.

@hereandthere Yes, we walk before eating anything. I just bring along water and after coming home, I wash my walking outfit and other soiled clothes on the washing machine while my wife cooks. Then we have our breakfast.

For nearly 30 years, I only had about 3 to 4 hours sleep a day , because of work.. I took advantage of the work that kept coming while I was young and energetic ..Now, at 60, I don't have to work as much ..and I can go to sleep anytime of the day or night, and I can now sleep in any day of the week if I feel like it ..
So, I guess, I benefited the most from my lack of sleep all those years ago .

I was and have always been a night owl, although I've had early bird jobs before. I never enjoyed them and it never became easy, but I did what I had to do. I'm back to working later shifts again even though I do have to work mornings at our business too, so I'm a bit of both, but only when necessary.

@hereandthere When I work the night shift and then our business in the days, I get four to five hours between supper and my late shift and then again when I return home again, early morning to about noon. Then we do windows noonish to five ish and begin again.
Normally I'll work second shifts so I go in between 2-4pm for eight hours. I'm up about two hrs after I get home and sleep to about 9am most days. So for those days, I can get 6-8 hrs sleep.

Usually, I wake up before 6am... But if I stay up late at night, I wake up at around 8 or 9. If I am busy at work, I wake up at 3 or 4am then start working (online).

you remind me of the saying "early to bed, early to rise"
but yeah i know people who are like that. once when their sleep is interrupted, they stay awake.
so when that happens to you, do you feel groggy the next day?

what time did you have to leave the house to be at work by 5am? did you drive or commute?
if you can't sleep well at night, do you take naps during the day?
