My "Wonderful" Son

wondering son wandering the net

My son often goes off in search of information he wonders about. At his in laws there were a lot of dragon flies flying about. He "wondered" about them, and did some searching. Did you know that dragon flies are predator insects? They eat other insects that are harmful. I did not know that dragonfly larvae eat mosquito larvae. Both insects like to lay eggs in the same place, and that is the result. So I have shared what my son shared with me. Keep an eye out for the dragon flies.

I don't like many insects but I do like dragonflies as they pose no threat to humans, and are pretty. I like them even more now after reading what you say about them eating those pesky mosquito larvae.

They are beautiful, just as butterflies are and some moths. I am glad to see them around.

That is interesting about the dragon flies as I didn't know that the dragonfly eat mosquito larvae and they lay eggs in the same place.

We have dragonflies here but evidently not enough to put a big dent in the mosquito population.

I am not sure if all varieties do that or not. Wikipedia tells me that here in Kansas we have six kinds of dragon flies.

@GardenGerty I was hoping with the loss of most of the bat population the dragonflies would pick up more of the slack. Haven't been so lucky.

Sad, I never saw in my place dragonflies. They stay mostly in a far away forested mountains. They should be raised as a good source to fight mosquitoes.

They seem to like to be around watery places, but maybe need cooler air than they find at your place.

I know that they eat insects too but never thought that they are into harmful insects. Maybe the reason why they flynover ricefields

My daughter is like that She took pictures of dragon flies at a pond, then did some research. It seems that some of the creatures we were calling dragon flies were not dragon flies at all, but damsel flies.

@GardenGerty We have quite a few kinds here, too (Colorado). I still don't know the names or recognize one from the other, but my daughter has quite a few photos of the different kinds.

I admire people who have such habit - searching and exploring things on their own. dragon flies eat other insects - I knew that but did not have any idea that they and mosquitoes lay eggs at the same place and dragon flies eat mosquito larvae. So that makes it more informational.

@GardenGerty I had no idea that dragonflies ate mosquito larvae. I say, the mor4e dragonflies we have the better. Not only are they beautiful but useful. Somewhere I heard that they were good luck, I don't know if it is true.
