I was just looking at my power bill detail and there's a fee on there for "state low income assistance fee" for $3.15. What is this for? I'm thinking its for the one time grants for people who apply for them get to help with their winter power bill. IDK but odds are there are many of us who don't apply... but at the same time why should all the customers pay to fund these grants and with out permission to do so?

Yes, I have utilized that help in the winter more than once. Was sure glad to have it too when I was trying to keep kids warm in the winter. I would check out this program with the company. Only way to find out for sure.

I would of liked to utilize this program as well but I believe I needed my hubby to sign off on the appication with me and he's too proud to apply. So we pay what we can afford in winter and the balance with our tax returns

Sounds like it's just another way to get a bit of extra money from you.

That is what I am wondering as well. To me a 'grant" usually comes from the government not taken from individuals with out their permission. Which reminds me of our baseball stadium the next county over we are still being taxed for even after the term has expired....more $$$ gouging

Most people don't apply even though they are eligible. They also don't apply for food stamps and other things they are eligible for.

Here in LA, California, there are all sorts of gems like that on utilities and phone bills. It's called income redistribution as you are forced to support people whom you don't know are deserving or not of your assistance.
