Are American citizens more at risk when travelling abroad?

In general, Americans are either loved or hated in countries abroad. Does this make them more vulnerable than citizens of other countries when travelling?

That is the prize of belonging to a rich and powerful nation. Where its government will do anything to protect its citizenry in a foriegn land. Wether its citizens are doing good or bad.
