"The earliest known picture postcard was a hand-painted design on card, posted in Fulham in London to the writer Theodore Hook in 1840 bearing a penny black stamp - further information tells us that the Penny Black stamp was the world's first adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It first was issued in Great Britain on 1 May 1840, for official use from 6 May of that year. It features a profile of Queen Victoria."
Lets get down to the Whangamata Surf!! "The town of Whangamata is sited on the southeast coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 30 kilometres north of Waihi, to the north of the western extremity of the Bay of Plenty. This is a top surfing area and is a popular holiday resort."
Hello and greetings from Val in New Zealand. What a wonderful surprise again from a fellow postcrosser and mylotter. We are indeed getting our SNAIL MAILS worth sending postcards to our friends.
At first when I opened the letterbox i thought it looked like a scene from Capri - very similar edged, island coastline. Just beautiful!
Thank you @valmnz - another great smile you put on my Thursday face!!

What a wonderful surprise. Hopefully one day you will visit the shores of New Zealand and an added bonus is there are no snakes there! Definitely a place for me!

@Inlemay And as Val will tell you there are three main islands to explore all very different too! I would love to do both the North and South islands.

The idea of the stamp was put forward by Roland Hill as a way to ensure payment.
Originally the recipient paid the postage, but this became a problem during war time. Soldiers would write home every two weeks or so just to let their wives know that they were still alive. This resulted in a situation where the mailman would arrive and the wife would refuse the letter because she knew immediately that the husband was alive.
This began costing the postal service a fortune, so another method was required.

Very nice postcard. Getting postcards is contagious. I love getting and sending. I just found another dozen postcards at the amusement park here and can't wait to send them out. The first of those is waiting to go out to a fellow myLotter today.
Great information about the penny stamp. I never knew when stamps started or where they originated from.

@Inlemay Unless it's local, I'm waiting until I'm ready to move and change my address with Postcrossing and give anyone here who wants it my new address, before I send out anymore postcards. I'm ready though, I just got another dozen and the stamps this morning.

I would love to be there, and I wonder if those people have any idea they are on a post card traveling the world
