Be Careful What You Leave Behind

A day or two ago I had an idea for a post but then it slipped my mind and I couldn't think what it was. I exchanged comments about this with Cruz @Tierkreisze whose post I Forgot What I Was Supposed to Say.. spoke of forgetting what he wanted to write about. Then a comment by Valerie J. Routhieaux (@just4him) on my discussion about Mozart and scatology brought my potential post back to mind. Valerie and I spoke about being careful what we left lying around after we died. Some years ago we went to a yard sale at a local church. Among the items being offered was a set of quite nice men's golf clubs. We ended up buying these and taking them home. We think they must have been from a deceased estate as it looked like someone had put the bag down after a game and never gone back to it. In the bag was an old score card and a pair of socks and a few other bits and pieces . So Vin was taking everything out and came across a brown paper bag right at the very bottom. In the paper bag was an triple X-rated (and then some) magazine. I wonder it didn't set the whole lot on fire! We wondered if the contents had been too much for the owner and he'd had a heart attack. It is probably a good thing that the guy's wife didn't clean out the bag before putting it up for sale. So - be careful what you leave lying around that you wouldn't want anyone to find when you pass on! The photo is of a fringed lily (wildflower) from the local golf course.

Now I understand why he had a golf bag, it was the excuse to get out, buy dirty magazine and hide somewhere to read them.

I imagine he would have played golf but looked at the magazine whenever he had the chance, before or after a game, or in his shed or whatever. He could hardly get away with having golf clubs but never using them.

Oh my, that is something that really shouldn't be left lying around. Good thing there weren't little prying, inquisitive eyes to see that magazine. I take it you burned it.

@JudyEv Good idea! You might have ended up with a case of "What will the neighbors think" should that have happened. I'm glad it didn't come to that and you burned it.

I guess he thought he didn't leave it lying around! He hid it! We burned it very quickly as we didn't want to die while it was still in our possession!

Naughty naughty habit that gentleman must have had. And he choose that over he game of golf! My Dad bought a large barrel of screws and fittings at an auction sale once, and buried in it was a large sum of money. He contacted the estate and advised them of it, because it was a large sum, and he figured that in the haste of getting things ready for the auction this was missed. They were very thankful that he brought it to their attention.

@JudyEv And yet when he misplaced 6 1,000 dollar bills that he had in the house before he moved, the new owners, my brother and his wife, never claimed that they found it. Its too bad that people cannot be more honest.

It can be easy to leave things inside books. I use whatever I can find as a bookmark.

That is one kind of a skeleton in the cupboard! With so many user id and password, I do not know where to keep them safe. When computers breakdown, I am afraid to discard them. Golf bag could be the place then, so I better start playing the game! siva

@paigea @Shiva49 It is hard to know where to hide passwords and user IDs. I need somewhere as there is no way I can remember them all even though there are really only a few.

@Tierkreisze We should write a 'journal' or story about ourselves for people to find but only put in the good things!

@JudyEv Maybe we can leave behind things that tell us about our personalities when we die? What do you think?

I have stressed concern to my husband that if something were to happen to us, our kids would have to go through our things and find things we wouldn't want them to.

So it's best to go through first and sort some stuff out, particularly anything you'd rather they didn't come across unexpectedly. :)

@JudyEv I know. But some stuff can't be thrown away or shouldn't, or I don't know. And then there is my mega box of journals dating back decades.

@patgalca It all gets very complicated. As we get older (like nearly 70) these things take on more importance. It probably doesn't need to be a concern for you yet.

LOL the wife might have followed him with a heart attack if she had no clue about her husbands habits. Its important to also be careful about what we post or watch online.

Haha that is some twist! It sounded a bit grim when you spoke of a "deceased estate" and a left-behind golf club and a brown paper and everything....and suddenly BOOM!! like a bomb shell comes the magazine! What they say is true I guess, one can never be too careful.

I can imagine the shock you both felt upon seeing the magazine. As far as I know, I don't have anything lying around that could be incriminating. At least I hope not as my memory isn't as good as it used to be.

@JudyEv - Ms Judy - Reading this fun posting brought me some smiles and some "relief." I am in luck. I do not play golf. My old girlfriends were all illiterates so that I have no stacks of letters anywhere. Also, I am way too ugly to have any others hanging around. My reputation, as sorry as it is, should be secure. I guess I will be in good shape unless my bride decides to cruise among my several postings here and there. Not too worried as to that. She does not like computers.
