Mentioning the name of this pub will make most British readers think right away of the pub featured in most episodes of the soap opera, Coronation Street, which is set in Manchester. The TV pub only ever existed as a Granada TV studio set. The pub represented in the sign is however a real one on Chapel Street, dating from 1799. it was previously known as The Lord Nelson. The TV pub was actually named first way back in 1960 so the real pub was almost certainly cashing in on its fame. The sign still depicts a sailing ship of the kind familiar to Nelson’s era, in rough seas, possibly bringing its crew home after the battles. The sign therefore reminds us of both the history of Nelson’s ships and the pub’s original incarnation, despite the modern commercialized cash-in name. The name and image present very opposing parallel identities for the pub. Arthur Chappell

That's a colorful seafaring sign appealing to sea buffs and drunken sailors.

love the thought that the Coronation Street was filmed there - I am watching it on BBC at the moment, not sure if its current or 10 years old - we get things late

@Inlemay It is actually a commercial station series - not a BBC one - the BBC set up Eastenders as competition for Coronation Street

Pubs tend to have such interesting names compared to the bars here in America.

@darksinistar we do get good ones - noticed in Germany that many just have the first name of the current owner, as in Rolf's Bar and Annie's Bar etc

So interesting. I wish I could see a British soap. Maybe I can on YouTube. I have listened to British audiobooks that I really like.

@OreoBrownie there will certainly be clips or episodes online - the biggest ones are Coronation Street, Eastenders and Emmerdale Farm - not a fan of soaps myself

if only I could have foreseen the usefulness of a pub sign study back when I studied abroad in England in a town with 52 pubs (at the time).

I've never gotten seasick, but that one could very well end up doing the trick.

@teamfreak16 I wouldn't want to be on the rigging or in the crow's nest in such a tempest

It's a good looking sign. I sailed on the Queen Mary which was a bit different to the ship pictured - thank goodness.

Right away I thought of Corrie when I saw the title of this post. I am Canadian and it is very popular here too. Interesting to know that there is a "real" Rovers Return!
