Who Should we be Learning From?

Some people have an innate ability to lead people and show us the way, show us the change that is required. I am of the opinion that the great majority of those that influence us are not famous people such as Steven Covey, Zig Ziglar, or others like them, but instead are our fathers, a child, a teacher, a local business owner, etc., someone you know as a leader. Who is the person that has encouraged you to do better in your life? Please remember this question relates only to personal improvement and not business improvement etc. They should be a person that you see as fundamental to your own self improvement over the years. They will be a teacher, even if that is not their profession.

It is not so much about "who" we should be learning from. There is a concept known as "learning to learn". If we have this mindset, we will see learning opportunities everywhere we go, and we can find that everyone can teach us something.

I agree that there are learning opportunities everywhere we go. I agree. Anyone can be a teacher, including the lowly shop assistant, janitor, or even the taxi driver.

Whilst I'd like to join the chorus of "it's me! I'm my own teacher!“, I can recall a quote from World War One by the then German Naval Commander in Chief, Otto Von Bismark, which goes something like, "The wise man learns from the mistakes of others; the fool from his own". I can also recall a certain Buddhist teaching that's along the lines of "when three people walk together, one of them will be our teacher". I'm too humble to give myself all the credit, but responsible enough to accept all my errors & failings as my own.

@pgiblett or possibly under guidance, perhaps from one who has mastered a certain skill at a certain point in time?

You give some interesting thoughts here, thank you. For most things we don't achieve success on our own, but do so as a part of a team.

I have two facebook friends who are always encouraging me to better myself, and helping personal growth. One pushes me to strech my creativity. She thinks I have a talent for writing (short fiction and bad poetry) and keeps telling me I need to write more. The second one I think of as "Sunshine" and she is such a happy person from the inside out. Even when she is going through hard times and not really "happy" she still radiates peace, if you know what I mean. I wish I could be more like her. But... everyone can learn so much from every person around them if they just take time to look and listen. The world, in general, has become rather self centered and blind to what their neighbor has to offer.

@nonersays My mother-in-law lost her husband a long time ago (while she was in her 30s) She did mourn for a long time apparently, but when I knew her she was well past that.

There were actually two people that helped me when they were alive. That was my mom and my grandmother. Now I have a real close friend who is a big help, even at my age.

Close friends are good people to learn from, as are family. The good thing with such people is that you can lean on each other.

I think either parent can be a great source of inspiration. I am not sure I would like having my profession chosen for me, but I will agree that once you have taken a path you have to be the very best at it.

Alfredo Rossi (user @amadeo ) says pretty much the same thing. I also find myself a self motivated type of person.

I am glad to see that there are others who follow the same philosophy. I remember someone saying when I was very young that just because someone says something doesn't make it right, you need to understand, research, and critique the ideas before that have any sense. It has been my way.

I think it is worrying how many people, especially the younger generation get so easily influenced by celebrities. They are the worst role models.

My parents encouraged me to become a better person. And myself too.
