I've lived in Germany all my life. I've never heard of the cornflower being the national flower. It's true, however, that some organisations use it as their symbol.
There aren't many cornflowers left due to the poisonous weedkillers being sprayed on the fields.

This is my first time to see a blue cornflower. Beautiful! I wish we have them here in Manila.

@hongdouzi - Here's a "different" kind of blue cornflower and it is being visited by a nice, friendly ladybug beetle, too...
