I just got the news on the local news channels that a massive earthquake threat is lurking in Bangladesh, India and Myanmar in the coming days or months. But the scientists are silent about 'when'. We have been hearing such news updates, but none of those actually came true. Scientists from various forums keep reminding us not to heed any such news. But this time, reportedly, the update is coming from the scientists. Even our State Health Minister raised the issue in the state assembly. The magnitude of the quake will be above 9. If that happens, the news says, it will destroy the natural gas reserve of this belt along with other devastations. The whole South Asia will be affected.

Above 9 is massive as there are normally only a couple or so quakes above 9 in a year.
If it gets a population center a lot will die and be injured.
Thing is these sorts of reports have been going on since the beginning of the year so I'm not sure how accurate they are and also predicting earthquakes is not an exact science yet as far as I know.
Hopefully it doesn't happen but we are overdue for a super quake in a number of places.
That's not even counting the yellowstone super volcano...many people think that is overdue to erupt but the USGS say there is a low chance of an eruption, I hope they're right (usgs).

@ritwik17c USGS is the United States Geological Survey.
There is no connection as such between earthquakes and yellowstone super volcano.
What I was saying is basically that we are all at risk from natural disasters.
And that the prediction of earthquakes is not an exact science yet.
There are a lot of places where some geological event could happen that would have a massive impact on the whole planet.
Yellowstone sits on top of a volcano and if it erupts it's have a massive impact on the whole planet.
Some sources say an eruption is overdue whereas the USGS say an eruption is a very low probability.

@Mike197602 Oh ! Very relieving to know that. But yes, as you said, we are all at that risk, about which we are totally unaware and there is no known method to predict it. What is USGS by the way ?

@Manojlamba , sorry I didn't understand that. Can you explain a little more? What is the connection between quakes and yellowstone super volcano? What is usgs?

@Shiva49 But do you think your government is doing enough to put in place a good disaster management mechanism or as regards modifying the building codes.. Certainly in our country, still a lot remains to be done.. right from creating awareness among people to changing the building codes and executing them strictly..

@ritwik17c Some countries have codes built in to withstand earthquakes up to an extent.
I have always wondered what controls are in place in India with buildings that soar higher and higher. Not only earthquakes but fires are also a great threat.
Prevention is better than cure and I do hope we have some level of standards for buildings as otherwise the damage will be beyond our ability to cope - siva

@Shiva49 Yes, I have heard about your country. I am convinced too. In our country, though there are laws and codes as regards building, a lot of violations have been reported in the media. A lot has yet to be done in enforcement...

what a terrible thing to have to worry over and no where to go. it will likely affect the whole world though if it is so bad.

Yea, @bunnybon7 , this one calamity always plunders civilizations.... A major one happened in this region (Assam) way back in 1950..

@Manojlamba I always believe that. Hope someone somewhere will bust the myths...
