I Almost Broke My Toe!

Yesterday, while walking at the beach, I tripped over a rock. Within minutes, one of my toes was black & blue, as well as swollen.
I waded in the cold ocean water while I continued walking. By the time I got to the car, my toe looked awful ... and felt worse!
This morning, I happened to have my annual physical with my doctor, so I showed my injury to her and her nurse.
The nurse said, "How did you do that to your toe?"
The doctor said, "How did you do that to your toe?"
The x-ray technician said, "How did you do that to your toe?"
(They must have coordinated their comments. It does look pretty awful.)
A few minutes ago, I got the good news. It is not broken, but it does have a hematoma and is badly bruised.
I decided to spare everyone a photo of my toe and just show a photo of the beach near where it happened.
Hopefully, I won't be limping around for very long!

@just4him - It is starting to feel much better now, although I still can't walk on it too long.

@DeborahDiane That's going to take a little while before it will feel completely good again.

Ice, lots of ice, not just today, but for as long as it hurts. Sometimes we forget that we are allowed to use tricks like this to reduce or eliminate pain. Sorry about your toe.

@ElizabethWallace - I have been putting ice on it. The toe is finally starting to feel better. It slowed down my walking for a few days, though!

@ElizabethWallace - So true! We do forget how important our fingers and toes are until we injure one!

@DeborahDiane I bet it did. We forget how important our fingers and toes are, until we injure one. Heal fast and well.

@DeborahDiane Well I hope it looks and feels better now since it's been a couple days. But in the meantime, it sounds like your toe is a good conversation starter

@JudyEv - Yes, my toe seems to be healing. My doctor told me that the advantage of "buddy wrapping" a broken toe, using a neighboring toe as a splint, is that the arthritis that sets in later will not be quite as bad. I'm glad it isn't broken, so I don't have to find out!

@DeborahDiane I've heard it said - with a broken toe, you can bandage it and it will hurt for six weeks or you can leave it unbandaged and it will still hurt for six weeks. I know you didn't break yours so hopefully it will be better much more quickly.

When I was a kid, I hurt my big toe...and I don;t even know how it happened..I guess I stubbed it or stoved it or something...but it hurt very very badly, and I could not even walk on it. My parents did not take me to the doctor, and they should have...because I had to be carried to the bus in the evening I remember that..The teachers that carried me...told me not to come back until my toe was better lol. Fortunately, we had Christmas break, shortly thereafter..and the toe got a bit better every day!

@crazyhorseladycx - They showed me how to "buddy tape" the hurt toe to a good toe, so the good toe could be used as a splint. They said that was the best way for it to heal correctly, if it was broken. I'm glad I didn't have to do the buddy taping for long, however, because it was really uncomfortable.
