"Chickadees At Night," a review of a great childrens' book

There is a corner in the store where I work that is devoted to books about birds. A part of that space is devoted to books for children. I read to my daughter every night when she was little and still have a small box of the books we shared. "Chickadees At Night" would find a place in that box if there was a child I read to now. Written by Bill O. Smith and beautifully illustrated by Charles R. Murphy, the book is a magical conjecture of where those noisy little black or buff and white little birds might go at night after they make all those cheerful noises in our yards and gardens. The lines rhyme and the illustrations show that perhaps they glide through the night air on the backs of owls or listen to the stories of elders. If there is a special child, grandchild, niece or nephew in your life, this book would be a keepsake and one that could be read for generations. The catch is that it is close to $20. That price may come down if a paperback edition comes out.

Jane Yolen: When I go Owling I think the book is called. Suppsedly a kid's book. Really for all poets and night wanderers.

@JamesHxstatic Yes!!! You got it. The illustrations are superb. The little tale reminds me of some of the short stories that I have written for Christmas.

Some children's books are really magical aren't they? I still have a couple that I can't bear to get rid of. Someone else can dispose of them when I'm gone.
