Can Humans manage without fatal Weapons?

There was a time when humans needed weapons to hunt. These were needed for survival. Since the time people learned agriculture, the role of weapons gradually changed. By and by the power factor came into play. If we retrospect we will realise what havoc the weapons have caused to the humanity.
India's freedom struggle is termed as non-violent. But today, everybody knows, it couldn't have been achieved without the use of weapons by some devoted freedom fighters.
What are these doing in the planet today? Will there be a day when people will understand and stop using fatal weapons? Or, there will be another war, even worse than the previous two? Will it not be catastrophic? Have we become too dependent upon weapons? Are we in vicious circle? A catch 22 situation?

I think it is only another great war that will bring peace and tranquility on the earth. Until such time expecting these two are far beyond the truth.

If you're trying to conquer someone else's land, nuking them is never a good option. You'd have to wait for a long time until the radioactive waste settles and leaves. It would also get worse if the air currents bring the waste to populated areas or military outposts. Now, imagine if a great war would occur. Countries would have no choice but to use their nuclear arsenals as they are already pitted by other world powers. They'd have to win the war quickly or else they'd risk being attacked with a nuke first.

@Tierkreisze Therefore, if we really want a war free and weapon free planet, then all countries, as one world community, have to do away with their arsenal, or else the situation will be even worse..

@shivamani10 Maybe another war will wipe out the humans as a race from the planet, considering the amount of lethal arsenal they have accumulated so far (these will be probably sufficient to destroy 2-3 more planets)...

People used hunting tools to protect themselves from other people, too. Those who identify as harmful were probably fought against while those who were helpful were protected. The same goes for today, but with a different view.

@ritwik17c People would just be using their fists then. The problem here is not the weapons. They are nothing but merely tools to help us protect ourselves. It is in people's hearts to fight for what they care for.

@Tierkreisze That's the point. They would just be using their fists and fists would not kill people en masse...

@Tierkreisze Just think, now if you have a weapon you may feel safe. But will you be really safe? Do weapons ensure safety? Imagine a situation, where none has any weapons, what would be the scenario? Who will be safer, who will be more vulnerable?

People are animals, and like all animals, are territorial. I don't see the use of fatal weapons going away anytime soon. ALso, if we did not have them..wild animals would take over..look at homesteaders for example.

@snowy22315 People could have done better than animals without these arms... I am not sure how successful these homesteaders will be without arms !!

It's a sad fact that nations or blocs believe that peace could be achieved by maintaining a balance of power, if we were equally armed then there would be peace, this gives way to an arms race that becomes deadlier and deadlier, i think everthing is too late now with all the lethal arsenal man alteady possess.

@louievill Yes...we have really gone too far. We won't be able to maintain any balance of power..and it is equally impossible to be equally armed, because to be equally armed is as good as not to be armed at all. There will be always this race to outdo the other...

Sure, we can. We once hunted with spears, sling shots and bow and arrow.

@JohnRoberts For survival we use implements and tools. Weapons are used for another purpose.
