How did unemployment affect your life and your family ?

There are just so many people struggling in long term unemployment. If it is only for a short while, the influence may not be that bad. But if it is long time from a period of 1 year to even 10 years , then it is going to be very difficult both to the family and the individual as well. There are many reasons for unemployed people. It is not because they are lazy or they didn't want to work. There are always some people who either over qualify for a new job or they are just getting too old in the eyes of an employer (even when they are not really that old). Whatever the reasons it many be, it really hurt the self-esteem of a person (especially for men). Have you ever encounter situation like this in your life or in your family ?
