Tied To The Clothesline

I remember when I wasn't very old that we lived on a busy street and there were buses going up and down the road. I thought these were neat and learned how to sneak out of the yard. Out into the street I went and sat down watching the buses. Thank goodness there wasn't a lot of other traffic. The first bus driver saw me and stopped. All he could do was honk his horn. Mom heard it and went out to see what was going on. There I sat. Mom picked me up and she apologized to the bus driver and inside we went. She found how I got out and fixed it. At least she thought all would be well until a few days later. Out I went again and the honking started again. Here came mom and inside I went. After the third time that this happened mom made me a harness, tied a rope to the clothesline so I could move around then tied it to the harness. So much for fun for me! At least I am alive.

I've heard of this happening before. I think it was a reasonable solution. At least you were safe.

Yes I was.It is shame that people would get in trouble for doing it now.

@JudyEv I probably would of done the same thing. The mother was thinking of the child's safety the best way she could.

@velvet53 We listened to a lady who was in Vietnam and saw a child tied with a short length of rope to a post. The mother came home half an hour later and the lady telling the story was ready to tear strips off the mother. But the mother had had to go shopping, couldn't take all her children and there were land mines in the area so the only way to keep the child safe at the time was to tether it. It's pretty awful that the child didn't appear to be supervised but what could you do in that situation?

@velvet53 I was thinking the same! I'm sure some neighbour would alert the police.

@MALUSE I'm sure they would but it could save a child's life too. Sad it can't be done.

@marguicha I was only one of eight kids. I was the next to the oldest. This has been a wild day for me.

Your mom was very sensible doing that instead of confining you to the house.

I have to agree with you. I just wish she was still alive so I could thank her for little things like this.

@velvet53 We have lots of little regrets like that once they've gone - it's natural.

@jaboUK It is the way it is meant to be. Like you said, it's natural and that is a great way to look at it.

LOL! At least your mom figured out how to keep you safe from yourself, right? I was a sleepwalker (and still can be). My mom locked the doors and I still went out. She had dad fix different types of locks on the screen doors and I still went outside at night.... Mom rigged up trip lines across doorways and I went outside without setting them off. (Most of these things I don't honestly remember. Mom told me about them years later.) I never went out into the road when I sleep walked. I just went out and sat in a swinging bench out in the yard. I sang to the moon, according to mom. Sometimes she would hear me and go wake me up to tell me to go back to bed. Other times she would go to my room to wake me up and find me missing. Then she knew right where to find me. I will still wake up sitting on my front porch sometimes, although it has gotten less frequent now than it was when I was a child. Most of the time, my daughter finds me sitting in what used to be out dining room, but is now our greenhouse. I am asleep among my plants.

I bet you scared your mom a few times when she couldn't find you in bed. At least you didn't leave the yard. Now you have a greenhouse to go to and that has to be a beautiful time.

And it didn't hurt him one bit and he was safe. I think our mom's knew how to handle things quite well.

I guess that was the only way to keep you safe from your bus fascination.
