Summer Vacation Extended

Summer vacation extended at least for schools here. Every state has a different go back to school date. Some states go back in August others in September. However here school usually starts back to school around the first week of August. Start date for the first day of school has been pushed back for another 3 weeks . So the students now have an extended summer vacation. I have some mixed feelings about it. Being able to spend more time with the kids is great and well I won't lie I am happy for the extra time to get everything together and organized is always appreciated. There are no complaints here about the extention except I didn't count on it. I haven't the slightest idea why the extra time was given and I guess in some respects I am not concerned as to the reason behind it. The other part of me is now trying to figure out what I can do to fill the extra time given. Has anyone else had this change in your area? What would you do with the extra time?

@OKennedy Do you have a lot of vacation days for your kids? We start the end of August and the kids are out the first week of June.

@just4him They actually do get a decent amount of vacation days I think. Usually they are out first week of June and they go back the first week of August but now they are going back the 3rd week of August.

To my knowledge, we are still starting in mid August. Our schools only started this August business just a few years ago - oh how I miss it starting in September just after Labor Day. I don't like the kids going back to school in the heat of the summer (and it gets super hot here). I would love that extra time. We would just continue on with our summer adventures. But I would want to know why the start date was extended . . . and would that mean school would end 3 weeks later next June or would there be more days off during the school year.

@OKennedy Does your school/district have a website or a page on Facebook? I snoop around online for information on this stuff - there's gotta be an explanation for it somewhere. I'm not positive, but I heard that they start in August so the kids have more time to get prepared for those silly national standardized tests. I think too that the kids would be more productive when they can come back to school during comfortable weather.

@much2say I agree if it is too hot or too cold you can't focus because you are focused on the discomfort you are feeling especially as a child. Those tests drive me nuts they sucked when we were in school and they haven't changed they still suck lol. I haven't seen them on facebook only have seen the schools regular school site. I didn't see any reasons as to why it was pushed back.

I think that starting school after Labor Day is a better idea than if they go back early as they have been. I guess when school actually starts back up I will know when is the last day of school and see if it has also been pushed back. I agree with you when it is really hot they shouldn't be in those stuffy hot classrooms and besides there is so much more that they can do in the summer.

That was going to be my first question is why they chose to do this. I would love more weeks with my children home. They go back August 23rd here.

I don't know about schools my area, but when I went to school, school was in September. If summer is extended, that means school will get out later right?

I am not sure that might be the case or it could simply be budget cuts which is making it so that they have less days of school. Unless I ask I won't know which I am going to do that when I am able to attend the first day back registration.

In my country, summer vacations last for only two months. They have never tried to extend it; however, during the school year, students have lots of free days from school due to holidays.

Here too its about once a month or so that the kids get a day or week depending on what it is. I won't lie I look forward to some of those holidays because I feel tired and run down sometimes and a few days to not get up super early is helpful.

Its back to school time, is it? I hope the children can stay at home for a little longer away from the summer heat. But I guess for some parents its going to be another ordeal of taking care of the kids during the extended vacation.

yes because this is usually the time you start letting the sitters know that you won't be needing them and now it would be more money dished out that wasn't planned on. For me the sitter thing is not a problem the problem for me is I hadn't planned stuff for the extra time lol but oh well we can wing it as they say.

I Home School my kids so we always start back around the same time every year, middle of August somewhere. I hope that doesn't mean their going to make the school year last longer before their Summer break next year.

Traditionally, we have always gone back to school at the end of August, but our school board moved the date up this year, by about two weeks. So instead of a 10-week summer vacation, the kids only got an 8-week vacation this year.

@OKennedy I think it's only for this year. Our school board is trying to better align the school year calendar with holidays to make it easier on families, so next year we should be back to the standard 10-week summer vacation. We just had to bite the bullet and take a hit this year to get the school calendar lined up the way they want it.

@moffittjc well then its not a bad thing then its sucks to have the changes sometimes but when its for the better results later it makes it understandable.
