Number one. It always comes down to number one. I'm talking about the top slot in my Favorite Songs about Rain series, an idea I've totally heisted from @JohnRoberts. We're at #1, "Rain, " by The Cult.
Led by vocalist Ian Asbury and (highly underrated) guitarist Billy Duffy, The Cult (previously known as Southern Death Cult and The Death Cult) formed in England in 1983. The band, most known for their 80's hit "She Sells Sanctuary," is best described as part goth, part Doors psychedelia (Asbury even performed vocals on a "New Doors" tour,) and part heavy metal.
"Rain," from The Cult's 1985 album, Love (the band's masterpiece,) is a good indication of that mix of sounds, with a healthy dose of glam-rock thrown in for good measure.
The song reached #17 in the UK, and the video received copious amounts of play on MTV's 120 Minutes.
I got to see The Cult open for Aerosmith in Germany, and their performance of "Rain" was a highlight of the entire night.
Not personal enough for you?
Try to beat this: after partying for 24 straight hours, I vomited all over the German/Belgian border one morning as "Rain" blasted from our van while they checked our border passes. Once they let us into Belgium, I partied some more!
Greatest rain song ever, as far as I'm concerned.

I know, and it was on the list, but I just kept bumping it down until it didn't make the cut. Blasphemous!

Laughing to myself. When I see groups like these, I always wonder what they looked like in high school. I'm thinking they probably looked average. Nothing notable or outstanding about them at all. It's a good song though!!

I knew you were a Cult fan. Asbury has such a great and distinct rock voice. The Cult sort of defy any specific label. They are hard rock but not classic rock staples yet embraced by alternative and played alongside Depeche Mode.

They are kind of hard to place. Sonic Temple and Love are two completely different albums, yet both are great.
