What do you think of people begging on social media?

United States

I am getting fed up with some people - people who I have 'friended' over the years, none of whom I know personally, begging for money. One couple is having a hard time financially for a few years now, but begging for money every few months is turning people off. It's either money for bills or money for doctors or money for - whatever. Another family who recently begged for money and other items is now on an extended 'vacation'. How do you beg for money to survive and then take off for an extended vacation? If you have no money source, or very little, how do you accomplish that? I'm financially secure and I'll be darn if I'm going to give one penny to people who are users. I think some of their 'friends' should wake up and smell the truth. While you are giving them money and gifts to help them get by they are now waiving good-bye to you! Wake up people! Photo: pixabay.com/en/hand-arm-shield-keep-good-bye-997395/

I'll occasionally give a dollar or some Altoids to the folks begging on street corners. But begging on the internet is just vulgar.

@TheHorse .. Well, the guy who wanted me to adopt him was dependent on his wife for his two square meals, and what more, he had healthy set of desires such as buying telescopes when in his shoes most people would be concerned about earning enough for family. What was I to deduce from that considering that 10 years of his marriage he hardly earned anything and wanted me to adopt him! That too when I said I only want to help orphans - neither parents should be alive and obviously a child not a married guy. :(

I hate it too - that GoFundMe for instance is so open to abuse. I believe it was formed with good intentions i.e. people needing help for medical bills for sick children, but what guarantee is there that the money is used for that? Also I've seen people asking for money to buy books or to go on vacation - sheesh! There was a woman came on here a couple of days ago with some sob story about needing money. It wasn't as if anyone here would know her - it was her very first post. I reported her as it's against the rules to beg for money here.

Begging on here...I must have missed that one. GoFundMe sounds more like GO FUN ME! It just grates on my last nerve that people are too lazy to work for their money yet have all this energy to come up with ways to get people to donate to the @fishtiger58 and @jaboUK

Begging has somehow become almost socially acceptable these days, which simply tempts more people to become involved for the easy money.

@AbbyGreenhill There are always many people around the city centre begging all day. One of the regulars actually lives in council provided property and draws social security payments as well.

There are just as much as the bad to the good on the internet and this does not surprise me since this is just another con game made to look legit. I think there is a need for these activities to stop and site hosts should work with the law enforcement to nip the problem in the bud. Otherwise these activities will not only thrive but grow with numbers if left to its own.

@AbbyGreenhill We Chinese always say that in order for the authorities to come down strong is for their very own to suffer the common immeasurable sense of loss and effects. So let's hope Zuckerburg and his gang would fall for one of these to let them have a rude wake up call. At the same time, the hospital admins should step up helping the needy people in their hospital instead of making futile attempts chasing for payments when they cannot even afford to pay for their own meals in the hospital. Charities should also find ways to reach out and make them more effective in times of need. Once they are successful with their outreach then I am sure both you and I would have a very good excuse parting our hard earned monies to them.

I doubt if Facebook would have put a stop to it. If people stop giving, that might end it.

@artemeis I gave to all kinds of charities but I have decided that now I give to animal rescue organizations. There is too much abuse in the human world of greed.

What's that old saying never lend money to family and friends. I'm with you on this. I don't lend out money. Only to my sons who I trust to pay me back. But please don't beg it's the quickest way for me to deny you.

We lent money to a relative years ago - when we were first married - and it was never paid back fully. I had to 'let it go' and move on but vowed never to lend money again.

@fishtiger58 Glad you didn't have to slap her in the head LOL! If I want to, w/o being asked, give someone money that's a whole different ball of wax. right now i don't' want to LOL

@AbbyGreenhill I can understand that, my sister lent my brother some money, that was 20 years ago she is still waiting for the money. Then a few years ago he called all of us asking for money. I called my sister and told her she better not lend him any more or I would come over and slap her on the head lol. She didn't lend him anymore. He is a grown man time to take care of yourself.

Unfotunately it's really hard to know who is sincere and those who are just wanting a hand out and know there are tons of vulnerable people online. We recently put up a gofundme page to help with expenses over putting Brownie to sleep. Of course we make no habit of doing such, we just couldn't bear the thought of losing him just because of not having the money for the vet to fix his paw. I do know of one person in particular who is always on facebook talking about how bad off she is---living in her car, eating out of trashcans etc etc etc. This has been going on for years with her.

That's a bad idea, begging money for your personal needs. But actually I used facebook to ask donations for organizations and schools who really actually needed help, and I'm quite successful and accomplish in some way I made these special children happy. We don't accept cash but we accept school supplies and used toys for these kids.

It's not bad to give some amount, but if people will start to abuse your kindness, that's another thing. You should be very wise in determining whether to give or not at times.

I hate this practice. People who are really in need do not ask, they do what they can but without asking for money. I have met so many who ask for money to pay the doctor and the week after they leave for vacations. I do not give.

@AbbyGreenhill I agree, but I am pretty sure that most of those who beg do not really need money. Our police asked not to give money to beggars, we can offer food and clothes, but not money and we must prevent the police so they know where they are.

When you see them do things like that and you know they lie, it turns you off toward donating to anyone.

There are people really in need and then there are users. If you don't even know them, it is worse. I did give once to a woman who was homeless with children in a state where no one would help them. That was a special case because kids were involved. I did not know her personally but I did know her online. It is up to you to decide whether helping those people is a good use of your money.

It is sad that the internet has these types on it. I have been short on funds and have even grumped about it on here from time to time but, I don't take charity either. Some people just aren't proud. And, yes, they are users.

E-begging had been a thing for years. There is a site known as Gofund me where you can ask people to pay your medical bills or fund some crazy project. There is a guy who managed to made 50 thousand dollars because he ask donations so he can make mashed potatoes.

There are also those who say they are with Christian Organizations overseas and they will ask for money for orphanages and helping destitute kids. I know there are some legitimate organizations but people online many times are lying and not with a legit Christian Organization.

I unsually unfollow and unfriend them. I just dont like the thought of you having complete body parts with the brain and still ask from people who worked for whatever they have. There are a lot of unfortunate individuals there who can't even move because they lack arms, or legs or is sick but is trying to work. C'mon. you're right. Wake up! ha ha ha ha ha ha.
