Waiting for Placement for Mom

United States
August 5, 2016 8:01am CST
My Mom was diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer's about 5 years ago. Lately she started exhibiting problems with her cognitive function. She was evaluated and found to have advanced to the middle stages of the disease. Another medicine has been added in hopes to increase her coginitive abilities. Yesterday in the middle of the night she fell down the stairs at the assisted living facility where she lives. Thankfully she was Not hurt. However she had no idea why she was there to begin with. She is highly confused and can't perform simple tasks. We are waiting for a local rehab facility to go to the home to evaluate her. It breaks my heart to have to place her in rehab. She may not be able to return to the place she is at now. These are tough times for me. I pray for strength for us all.

It's not easy putting parents in assisted living. My prayers are with you and I hope it goes well with your mother in the rehab.

She is fighting having to go to physical therapy. She needs it to regain her strength. While in assisted living she spent most of her day sleeping or watching television. She lost a lot of muscle strength, so even walking up and down stairs was difficult.

@just4him She doesn't like to do anything. The good thing is that she does much more than when she was is assisted living.

I am sorry to hear this! I've watched a family watch their loved one slide down that path before,it was hard.

My uncle, her brother, also has the disease. He is more progressed than my mother.

@Jessicalynnt I am hoping that I am spared this if it does indeed run in the family. I do worry.

I feel for your Mum very much.Sadly they say there is no certain cure for this sort of disease. Here some people who suffer from it even can't recognise their family members..

My mother is beginning not to remember her young grandchildren and her great grandchildren. She is forgetting people from her past. We know that eventually she may not recognize her children. Breaks my heart.

@ElusiveButterfly I understand how you feel.It is sad when a Mum can't recognise her son or daughter.Sounds like your Mum has been at a ripe old age.

That's such a cruel disease - physical impairment is much more preferable than that. Sorry that she (and you) is going through that.

She is now in a wheelchair. She is getting physical therapy to help her regain her strength. I hope they can get her up and walking again.

@ElusiveButterfly My father had Alzheimer's. It is sad to see them becoming confused and frustrated. I know you have the strength to support and help her in this time of need. Sends prayers your way.

Thank you Susan. I try to maintain my composure for her sake. It isn't easy. She snaps at me quite a bit.

@ElusiveButterfly as they progress on their journey through Alzheimer's they go through personality changes. I watched my father go from an educated southern gentleman to a whirling devil lashing out at everyone around him. My prayers are with you during this difficult time.

@ElusiveButterfly I say you are. It is harder to be a care provider for family than anyone. You are doing the best thing by taking it day by day! I hope everything will work out soon for you and your mother!

I am so sorry to hear this. This not something none of us ever want to have to watch a family member go through. My grandmother lived with alzheimers for 10 years. It was sad she was basically infantile stage.

I am in healthcare. Was hard to see my clients go through various stages. It is horrible to watch my mother go through this.

My heart goes out to you. It was tough when my Nan could no longer safely be at home and I dread the day when my parents cannot be alone although both are mentally find so far. It is hard because you feel you have lost the person into the illness.

I miss the way she laughed, told a joke, danced, sang, played the guitar, hugged. All things change, this I know, but this kind of change is horrible.

My prayers are with you as I'm going through the same thing. It's not easy for our parents when they age and it isn't easy for us either

I truelt feel for you. My aunt, who I grew up with, has no clue who I am anymore. It's like someone stole all of her memories of me away from her. Hard to swallow.
