How do you throw a Surprise Party?

Have you ever given anyone a surprise party?
I'm going to be throwing one soon, and it's going to be a birthday party. I'm just not quite sure how to pull it off. It involves me traveling and showing up to be part of the surprise. It's kind of tough trying to make lots of plans long distance (and without giving away the secret).
Do you have any tips or suggestions? I'd appreciate any ideas.

I haven't either, in fact I can't remember anyone getting or planning one when I was growing up.

Yes, I have people there, but they aren't particularly helpful (I guess I'm a bit of a control freak as well.. I want it to be perfect!). ;p

@CRK109 You are right. I do ask, but I guess I don't accept help very well. They do things much differently than I do.

@Lady_Justice Being a control freak is difficult to fight but sometimes asking for help does make things perfect! lol

I have never thrown one, myself, though I've been to/taken part in several. ;)

My children and I threw a surprise retirement/birthday party for my husband while we were in another state. I think planning the invasion in Normandy might have been easier.
Sorry I don't have any advice other than start planning EARLY.

Yes, we started early, but it's getting close now. I'm not sure how we can get her there without blowing the surprise.

@Lady_Justice I had to do a lot of lying.

@1creekgirl Yeah, that's the hard part for me.. lying, even if it is just about a party. I've almost messed it up a bunch of times already.
