Stop Looking Down on your Phones While You're Moving!

I was standing on the corner, waiting for the light to turn green. I was right on the edge of the curb, then suddenly a teenage girl slammed right into me, knocking me off the curb. She was walking and looking down on her phone. The reason I know this, is because a few seconds earlier I had turned around and saw her walking toward me, engrossed in her phone. I thought nothing of it at the time. Could you imagine if I wasn't there standing on the edge of the curb? She would had walked right into oncoming traffic. Thank goodness she wasn't hurt. I told her to please be careful next time.

Maybe she was hunting pokies. It seems like there are a lot of accidents now from people looking for those critters.

@Genipher I knew a guy who papered his walls with tin foil. Does he count?

@theBlock Government mind control. That's why. That's why we don't have cell phones and go out wearing tin foil hats...

It’s bad enough when people talk and walk but when they’re texting they need to stop walking, it puts people in their path in danger. You could have been hurt had there been a car passing by. Imagine what could have happened if this silly girl had slammed into a frail old man or woman?

@rebelann I know! I should've spoke more harshly to her, but I didn't want to scare her. Anyway, I hope she learned.

I have seen that happen by people of all ages. They don't think about what could happen when they aren't paying attention because they are too busy on their phone.

@theBlock I wonder how how many people have been hit by cars because they were too busy on their phone.

I saw this in Walmart, a girl was walking into carts looking at her phone. She looked up and then kept walking looking at her phone not even apologizing.

We saw the same thing a couple of weeks ago right in the street. several kids, I say kids but they looked adult. Anyway they had their phones in their hands wandering all over the street. My better half slowed down and blew the horn. I'm surprised someone didn't get run over.

@theBlock We went out to lunch and people were running all over the restaurant looking for pokamon. Some were going back in the kitchen. i'm sure the staff didn't appreciate that.

I almost ran into a teenager on my bike the other day. He walked right across the bike path without looking. After I screeched to a stop, he said "oh, sorry" and continued walking across the bike path without looking the other way. Had he gotten nailed, I might have chuckled, I hate to say. Will it take a speeding Dodge Charger to teach him a lesson?

@theBlock Timothy, thank you for this post and letting us vent on this subject. It is a real pet peeve of mine. I am so tired of those walking down the street with their eyes glued to their cell phones and not paying attention. I have seen mothers pushing their strollers so busy on their cell phone that they could care less about those around them or those that just stand there having to check their cell phones. I have had people coming right at me with their eyes down while I am on my scooter but somehow they move out of the way. I just give them a look. I am not their keeper but it seems like I have to act as one out there on the streets of Jerusalem with idiots and their phones.

Crap like this makes me glad to be a cynical adult who can't afford a cellphone. For starters, I try to avoid these irritating habits I witness people perform. I mean dagnabbit, these people ar far more outgoing than me, how do they not know:"Oh I'm out in public, I've gotta watch where the f*ck I'm going." Though I'm kinda scard to think it might be a race thing. xD See I tend to be a black dude in a crowd of white folks, so I gotta look where I'm going. That doesn't say I feel safer about other black folks, as I feel less safer around them, but as a result, I tend to look over my shoulder... And this while listening to my ipod. But even with that I have the audio turned down low enough to hear everything around me, because when walking next to a busy street or crossing a the street via a walk way, I don't trust those lunatics behind those wheels! But people that engrossed in their smartphones and smart devices pretty much have it easy in life, so they don't feel the need to be cautious... It's a dangerous prospect, but it's something we gotta deal with.

@Hanyouyomi I agree 100% Yep--If one hasn't experienced "real" conflict, then it's more difficult to see or sense threatening situations. Most of us know not to stick our hand in the bear cage, but sadly some of us do....

I don't see what can be so important on their phones that they have to be looking at them 24/7. I mean come on you are walking you should be paying attention to where you are going. There are some people out there that actually believe that they have mastered texting and driving and believe that they want ever wreck while doing it. That is scary to know and makes me a little scared of driving.

@CaseyRoss I rode in the car with my nephew, and he was texting while driving. I told him I love him, but let me out of the car if you're gonna text or I'm gonna tell his momma, too. The boy stopped texting. I had a long talk with him.
