Rip-Off Movies....Are they really worth it?

So I watched "Focus" last night. Will Smith and Margot Robbie make an excellent acting team. They have serious chemistry on screen, and their acting styles really mesh well. But while I was watching this movie, I kept noticing little things about it...such as?
Have you seen a little movie entitled "Now you See Me?" about the magicians doing the magic shows all over, and learning how to distract their audience? "Look over here, but the real magic is happening over there."
Well, Focus is almost a blatant rip-off of that particular part of the movie, the only difference being that Nicky (Will Smith) and Jess (Margot Robbie) use it to rip people off. They "gamble" knowing they're going to win, because they've rigged the game, or they just flat out pickpocket. Either way, Nicky says in the film, "You get them looking over here, but you rip them off over there." Or something to that effect.
Either way you look at it, if you really want to see a good movie about changing focus and performing sleight of hand tricks, then just go rent Now You See Me, because Focus just wasn't really worth it.

Actually, that part of the film reminded me of the British TV series "Hustle" (there's a U.S. knockoff called "Leverage") which pre-dates NYSM by some time. In Hustle, you'd see the con from one angle, then they'd redo it afterwards showing all the things that made the con and why what happened wasn't what you expected.

@ChildofGod81 Hustle made it to something like ten seasons I think.

@egdcltd awesome. I love the long running shows. I'm a total nerd, but I like the shows that run long enough that you become part of the family, if that makes any sense. "friends" was like that for me. You just get to know the people behind the characters and can really identify when a show runs for a long time.

I love Leverage! I'll have to look for Hustle now :) Thanks! Yeah, Leverage is pretty old. I was sad it was only 5 seasons. I'll check out Hustle though :)

I haven't seen either of the movies. I realize there is nothing new under the sun, but I wish there wouldn't be fairly current movies going on at the same time with such a similar plotline. How old is Now You See Me? I'll take your recommendation and look for that one.

Now You See Me is only a few years old. There's a sequel out too, but I haven't seen it yet. Once I do, I'll totally write it up for you guys :)

@marie42 well that's typical lol. Sequels are rarely as good as the original.
