Why do people get tattoos?

They are expensive (if properly done), and you could always repent some years down the road.
Why wouldn't people prefer temporary tattoos over normal perpetual tattoos? After all, you can never know what kind of person you'll be 10 years from now.

I have 5, and yes, I do think I'm cool. I'm cool because each of my tattoos represents a person, a feeling, or a message, that is unique to me. No one else in the entire world has the same combination of images, and symbols as I do. The U.S. culture prides itself on citizen's ability to be individuals, and the right to express themselves.
As for who I will be in 10 years? Who knows. My tattoos are a benchmark on my timeline; they will always remind me of the story of when, where, and with whom I got them. And I could never regret any of those times.

No idea. To look cool, I suppose? Not fond of tattoos - temporary or not, so I can't really say much. I did watch a documentary once and some people choose to have them as something that reflects their identity.

Because some people want to decorate their bodies. The majority of people who get tattoos have thought, planned, and saved up to get what they want and it isn't going to be something they regret. Not everyone is a naive teenager or drunk person that does out and gets one that they wake up the next morning a regret it. People who have the tattoos and are covered in them love their art and don't care what it is going to look like later on.
