A lovely musical surprise.

In Australia, around March/April/May, there are a few Blues Music festivals. One of the most well-known on the East Coast is the Byron Bay Blues fest. Many international musicians come to Aus for this. However, it is really expensive to attend, far too expensive for me. The upside of this though, is that those acts generally use the time to do a quick tour of Australia at the same time. We drove 3 hours to see the Tedeschi-Trucks band perform in Melbourne, which was lovely, even if the venue was extemely over-booked and poor Ms Tedeschi had lost her voice.
However, even better, was the fact that Jason Isbell was perforning in a rural city, Bendigo, only 2 and 1/2 hours drive for us. We booked our tickets, and accomodation, and off we went.
After a very average meal at a pub, we walked to the Ulumbarra Theatre for the performance. What a wonderful surprise. The theatre was an old Gaol, that had been very cleverly turned into a Performing Arts Centre, but with many of the jail parts still intact. The ticket office was an old cell, and there were still cells with the bars on the doors as we walked down the foyer. The outside, too, still had the high prison walls topped with barbed-wire. Beautiful. The picture above shows the blending of old and new; the red carpet and a seat, against the prison walls.
The next surprise was even greater. The gig was advertised as Jason Isbell only, but in fact Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, the whole band took to the stage. Oh, my husband and I were in heaven. He played some old favourites and some new work too. The acoustics in the theatre were wonderful, and it would be one of the best performances I have ever seen.
If you don't know of Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, you can listen below. Brilliant!

Nice song. I have a friend who plays blues guitar. Apparently he knows everybody. Going with him to a blues festival is a good way to meet all the musicians personally.

@koopharper it is a lovely song, isn't it. My husband plays blues guitar too; he really loves the bottle-slide, so you can imagine how much he enjoyed the concert. Isbell is really good at slide.

@koopharper we've got a friend who comes around to our house occasionally with his harmonicas. My experienced husband on guitar, Shane on his harmonicas, and me, trying to get one chord right in about 50 on my tenor Ukelele. They are good fun nights.

@JadePlatypus That's pretty much it. Depending on the group, we might have them for a house concert here. We're had some great groups although not 'great' as in famous.

I always imagine the overseas artists thinking "sheesh, it's a 12 hour flight. We better make a tour of it, it's not worth it just for a couple of days"

@shaggin it was lovely. I believe the local TAFE (Technical and Further Education) run their training restaurant from the jail, so thats where we will eat next time, and give the grungy old pub a miss.

@Daljinder , the festivals here are very expensive to attend, as they usually run for 2 or 3 days. Many of them require one to camp in tents. I prefer concerts - I know I am going to sleep in a soft bed even if my ears are still ringing from the noise.

How nice! I saw Jason right before Southeastern took off. Now he sells out quickly. You're right, he puts on a terrific show. It's great that he got his act together after years of drinking, and that he's achieving success.

@fourwalls exactly. He credits his new wife, Amanda Shires, with his new life after DBT. But, I do like DBT too. Here in Aus, when we first started listening to DBT and Isbell people would say 'Who?' A few years later, and we have friends saying 'have you heard of this guy?'. Well deserved fame.

@Naryas we really did enjoy ourselves, and have made a promise to each other that we will return to see something different at that venue. Or Jason Isbell if he comes back again!
