Poetry Websites or Contests to Earn Money?

I've been writing poetry for twenty years, but have never published any poems. Two of my children write poetry also, and are pretty good. This is more for them than me. Does anyone know any poetry sites to earn money or places to publish poetry that isn't a scam? Or anybody know any ways to earn money with poetry? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Unfortunately a lot of poetry sites are scams. You might consider doing a Kindle book and seeing if you can get sales.

My son recently got int writing online, poetry and short stories. An eBook with my kis poetry & mine sounds like a great idea. May not be any money in it but it sounds like a fun family activity.

I have a poet friend who gets published in literary magazines and poetry magazines. She says you have to read the publications and figure out what kind of poems they are interested in. She even gets paid for some of them. She keeps a poetry journal. When she walks or goes somewhere, she writes down the imagery and emotions that inspire her about a place. She then has material to insert in her poems. Many would be forgotten if not written down day by day.

I used to have a journal with all my teenage angst poems. Sadly it was lost during a move. Thanks for the suggestion, we'll look into some literary magazines and poetry magazines. Great suggestion on writing imagery & emotions down asap. I've lost many great or could be great poems this way. Some of my best lines come to me after I go to bed.

I have never found one I really trusted. I was Faithwriter's first featured poet which was nice, but that wasn't a paying thing and poems I tried to sell there never sold. I have a suggestion though. I put my mum's poems into a file and uploaded it to Lulu.com and also have published a couple of poetry books that way myself. It takes a little work, but you have an heirloom and memory for the family and sometimes the book will sell. Not the same as a competition, but your kids would love to be able to say they published their own book and it makes a great Christmas present for relatives. Given you publish for free and only buy the copies you sell its a nice thing to do and would also make a great holiday project as the kids and you can also learn how to format a book for future reference. This is a pain with any other kind of book and a lot easier when you are publishing poetry. (Do a simple 7x9 book and not a posh table edition unless you want that to keep costs down. The kids could also design a cover.

I've seen numerous sites listed for poetry - BUT I just would not be sure which ones are reliable. I hope someone comes along who participates in poetry sites.Unfortunately I think it's an area where people get ripped off a lot.

You got that right. I turned in one poem to a poetry website 8 years ago, had it published only to find out, they would only publish it was if I bought a book they'd publish it in. They sell you an overpriced book of your poem, with a other poems from people just like you. The book was $50, needless to say I didn't buy it.

Writing poems on myLot, that would be a great idea. It's a way to show off your poems and talent before publishing. Good idea!
