I Thought It Would Be Nicer

When the last strong typhoon hit us last July of 2014 , it damaged our cable lines in our neighborhood . The cable company told us that we have to pay 5,000 pesos (US$112.35 ) for them to replace the cable wires going to our house . We find it absurd that we will have to spend that big money again , so instead we got another supplier of cable shows - one with a satellite disk . However , this new supplier of cable shows would always be down whenever it rains . Oh my ! We thought it would be nicer to have it , but then we are thinking of not having it anymore , since it is so unreliable . Good thing you can opt not to buy its load for the month so you can watch from their many channels . So sometimes we don’t buy the load and just opt to watch the local shows . But then , it seems the cable box we paid for 2500 pesos ($55) was put to waste . . Do you have cable connections ? How is it ?

since the u.s. was forced by the government to go digital with the t.v.'s, one cannot get any stations if'n there's storms betwixt ourselves 'n the towers. which means if'n there's bad weather 200 miles from here - those stations don't come through. we've no cable nor satellite, jest rely'n our t.v. antennae 'n ancient t.v., lol.

So that's how it is there . I think it is the same here . Bad weather like typhoon and heavy rains affects the cable channels. Though with the antennae , it is clear unless there is a storm .

@SIMPLYD 'fore the government made all the local channels go digital, we only lost signal if'n the power went out, 'r their tower got hit. sadly now we've no way 'f knowin' where the bad weather'd be headin' coz all stations go off :( so much fer early warnin', eh? sigh... the antennae 'tis useless with such 'nless there's no weather disturbances - e'en the winds 'll mess't 'p.

Yes, we have cable connection with Fil Products and we were Customer No. 40 since they first established a branch in our city in the 80's or 90's. I never switched service providers.

Good for you , because your cable provider is good . What about if the cable wires are damaged do they charge you for the wires to be replaced ? Actually our former cable provider was good . However , when the asked us to buy worth 5000 pesos of cable to replace our damaged cables since the typhoon Glenda , we thought of just switching to this one , an unreliable one .

@sunrisefan Precisely , that's what we reasoned out , that's why we chose to have this satellite disk . With it , we can just load at the minimum of 300 pesos for some more movie channels. But if it is higher like 500 that we load , it would include high definition channels like HBO. But the seniors at home would always watch on early morning, noontime and in the evening for their favorite local shows.

@SIMPLYD Thankfully, we never had a problem like yours but I think it's the service provider's responsibility to replace the damaged cables and not yours. Cable TV is there business so the cables running to the subscribers' homes are their responsibility. It's just like riding a taxi - if the tires need replacement, does the taxi owner let the passenger the tires?

I only have the internet service. That is wrong that you have to pay so much and not get many channels unless you pay more.

Yes, that's how it is . Unfair . Unlike our former cable provider , it provides those nice channels which in this new ones would mean a more expensive load .

I had dish satellite once and everytime it rained, it would go out. It was very frustrating. We use a cable provider now and it is very reliable.

So your satellite dish is also like ours . Had it not been for that unreasonableness of the cable provider that we buy cables worth 5000 pesos or $106.38 as replacement for our damaged cable wires , that one is also reliable .

@SIMPLYD I don't think that it is fair that you would have to buy cables to replace the ones that are damaged. Anything outside of your home should be their responsibility. At least it is that way here.

Is it the usual cable provider for your house or a satellite disk? We load according to what more nice channels we like . For i think PhP300.00 that doesn't include HBO and another channel. But if it is PhP500.00 there's HBO and other high definition channels. But usually at night and lunch time it's the local TV network that is being watched by the seniors at home .

Oh that's nice to hear . It means they are a good service provider of cables . Though , had it not been that we were made to pay for the cable wires , when they said that the old cable lines were already damaged by typhoon Glenda , we still would like their service because we got no problem with the reception .

@thelme55 Actually , i don't watch much TV now except for some teleseryes . What i did was upload an app wherein i can watch the episodes i wasn't able to see because i am at the office when it was aired . That way , i can watch it at night using the said app and with the WIFI on.

@SIMPLYD maybe you just have to pay for a good cable. I would not be having a cable if I live here most of the time. You can also watch the tv series through you tube. I have done that when I was in Germany.

I think it's how your satellite dish is positioned. WE have the same but when it's raining hard, it works without any problem. We are on post paid though and not prepaid.

It could be indeed for the way the satellite dish is positioned . Maybe , on how the dish works is affected if it is postpaid or prepaid . Question ; is it different when we say satellite disk or satellite dish . Which is which ?

SO is your satellite connection reliable meaning they don't get blurred when it's rainy . Wow , it's good that your broadband's wired connection is underground . Don't it get flooded underground ?

@SIMPLYD during rain it is not good but rest of the time dish works fine. yes during rain those pipes may get into some issue but mostly everything works.

That is the downside to satellite. In heavy storms it does tend to go down. I'm sorry the cable company is making you pay for the wire connection. It should be part of the contract. I use a connection service, not exactly cable. It's fiber optic I think.

Indeed it is one downside of the satellite . But had it not been that we were made to pay for the new cable lines when the old ones were damaged by the typhoon , we could have preferred the cable provider still . So your connection service not only provides you the channels for TV viewing but for your internet ?

@SIMPLYD The price and the channels. I think Direct TV is a little bit more in price, but they are now partners with AT&T. Dish Network is less in price, but they have free previews each month.

True , at leaste you don't have to pay a monthly bill for it . But for this satellite dish , we only buy a load should we want it . We just watch the local TV shows which is what we always watch at home specially my mother-in-law. Yes, if i had my way , i wouldn't want it too . But anyway , it's my brother-in-law who wants them for my father-in-law whose only past time is watching TV . Though , he noticed that FIL would always watch DVDs at his small DVD player , so sometimes he doesn't buy a load for it .

Really , wireless cable ? You mean there's a satellite disk you have on your roof or installed in the house . No, it's not the black box of ABS . It's provided together with the disk for the satellite TV . It costs PhP2,500.00 . Useless , because when we don't load , we just use the local TV networks .

The last time that I had a cable connection, I was frustrated because their service promises are too way back. Most of these cable providers are very good during the sales process but when it's done, most of them doesn't care anymore. From that time on, I just go with the internet for all our information needs. It's better I think for the time being.

Maybe because it is the sole provider of cable in your area . This one is a disappointment . Our old provider is a lot better had it not been for what i posted about them .
