If A Tree Falls...

Colne Brook Tree Fall

While our weather has not been particularly hot, it has not been that wet never mind stormy. I was taken aback, a little, to find a couple of trees have fallen over and blocked my walk. The first leafy obstacle was fairly straight forward to negotiate, but the second blockade, shown in the picture, was more fun. Quite a hefty tree had fallen across the little bridge over the Colne Brook. Crossing this one involved a bit of over and under, but I got through. I spent a few minutes looking at it. I don't think it was deliberately brought down, but I was not quite sure why it went over. So, it may be worthwhile to be a bit more careful on this section of the walk; don't want a wobbly tree coming down on my head.

I avoid to go out when the wind is blowing, it's too easy to get something falling on your head. Several trees went down a week ago due to strong winds.

I would have thought that, if it had been that breezy. I guess they'd just been getting wobbly over time

@Ronrybs If it rained a lot before, they can fall even without the help of the wind.

@Ronrybs I am lucky I have never encountered falling trees. I do remember last summer a wild storm came up and it hit the city center so bad that one person got bashed by a falling tree in a park. So I felt sorry for him but glad I was out in the suburbs under my safe roof. When the wind picks up I stay home.

Yes, and it is not the first time it has happened, though last time there had been some bad weather

Yes, it is sad. I like trees always handy for hiding under in rain or shine

Be careful. That could be rather dangerous.

Won't maintenance clear out the fallen trees rather quickly?

It's out in the sticks a ways, so it takes a couple of days/weeks to get the job done. it isn't approachable by vehicle

Plus there is the dilemma of whether to move it or let it become part of the trail.

Public footpaths have to be kept open and a court can order it done. Most councils like to keep ahead of things like that and save money on legal fees. Well, mostly!

But you always wear a helmet, so you don't have to be afraid!

I sometimes wear a panama when out for a walk. That should do the trick!
