When my mother went to Florida she brought this plant back for me. It is a type of palm tree. It says on the side of it Parlor Palm. It was out in my back room which is basically an enclosed porch. It gets super hot out there in the summer and freezing out there in the winter. I forgot about it which means it got real dry. I noticed a little bit of green mold looking stuff the other day but just a tiny bit. Now it has a lot of it all over the dirt. Its a bright light green color. I feel sick looking at it. Anyone know what to do with this? @daddyevil any help you can give me?

Houseplants are a great way to purify the air in your home. Unfortunately, sometimes your houseplants develop mold and therefore become more of a detriment to the air than a benefit. Mold can be caused by a number of things including poor...

I would change the soil. Mold does not help most plants.

get rid of the green stuff, water it thoroughly and put in a place where it does not cook or freeze and do not water til the soil is dry.

Great advice sounds exactly like the information I looked up. Do you have one of these plants?

So, what happened? did you remove it? is this bad for the plant? so far I haven't encountered a mold like that.

I scooped it off the soil. I mixed up water and apple cider vinegar and sprayed it all over. I let it set in the sun for a day and then watered it. I think it is actually a leakage from the roots from me forgetting to water it rather then a mold.

Uh-oh! I am sorry, shaggin... I can't help you with your Parlor Palm. I've never tried growing one and can't find any articles that discuss the green mold looking stuff. I did find several articles that explained what to do to grow it correctly, but nothing I found talked about anything like what you found. Do you know which type of Parlor Palm you own? Apparently there are two main plants called a Parlor Palm. One is Chamaedora elegans and the other is Howea forsteriana. (Unless I have misunderstood something.) Here is one of the articles: Here is another article discussing Parlor Palms. http://houseplants-care.blogspot.com/2006/11/areca-palm-care.html
The Parlor or Parlour Palm sometimes going by Chamaedorea elegans or Neanthe bella is a good houseplant for many places in the home because it adapts well to low light and humidity levels, all the while looking beautiful

@DaddyEvil that is so cool that this plant helps clean the air that is very cool to know... except mold on it would make the air worse...That could make sense with liquid leaking under stressful conditions... like me forgetting to water it and the soil getting super dry..

@DaddyEvil You helped plenty! The "mold" was such an unusual bright color. The roots are showing this needs to be repotted I think as well as me not fogetting to water it. It does say it doesn't like a lot of water but it needs me to not forget about it completely.

@shaggin I found one article that said that the palms could leak a liquid that looked similar to your picture directly from their roots, but I can't find that article again. The liquid was leaked because the plant was under stressful conditions. (I closed that link because at the time I was looking for molds, not liquids from the plants.) I'm sorry, but while I was gone I had to shut down and clean my pc. Now, I can't find that link again.

You spray the molds, placed that plant under sunshine.

I am not good at gardening, but hope your plant will grow well after changing the soil as suggested by others.

The soil was so dry it was easy to remove the green stuff with a spoon. I don't think I need to use all fresh soil but I might set it outside in the sun on nice days.

I'm poor in that department (gardening). What has caused those green molds?

I wish I know. DE found me an article that said it could be roots leaking during stressful conditions. I assume if that is what it is it is caused by my lack of watering it.
