Could this be a scam I encountered?

While commenting on a post my page redirected me to another page which said to call a toll free number as my internet browser is blocked to prevent a virus from attacking.
I called the 888 number and the man with an Indian accent answered ad tech support. He accessed my computer and told me how I need more protection that all I have is virus protection.
He said for $99 he can fix my computer this one time or for more they have monthly prices for 6 months of service etc.
He seemed to be pressuring me so I disconnected the chat and our computer connection. As I was doing so he was typing into the run...bluescreen . I asked him why he was doing that and he said he wasn't that my computer was doing it.
I then tried typing in other websites and saw that I was able to access them that I wasn't actually blocked.
I went to Norton antivirus and upgraded my basic coverage to what it was before...standard. I will then scan for viruses etc.
I know a few days ago I saw another mylotter went through this same thing and I thought it sounded scammy then. I will have to look back and see if I can find her post.

It is a scam that is happening to everyone. Just get rid of it. For me it works to hit ctrl-alt.-del and end the process through the task manager. I have not found out how to get rid of it for good. My antivirus is not preventing it in real time, so I'm on the lookout to find out how to stop it. in the first place.

It is a kind of ransomware. I even saw it on Linux, although it cannot do any damage to a Linux box. You should have not authorized this guy to access to your computer. He might have installed a trojan horse difficult to detect : do a complete scan and be careful.

I did a complete scan and a even more thorough administrative scan and both showed nothing. There was an attempt before I called him of a virus but norton blocked it. I can't even remember how he got to access my computer. It was pretty swift.

It happened to me this morning but I hit Control Alt Delete to get rid of it. I knew it was a scam from other people going through the same thing.

While I was on the phone norton blocked a virus. I found the file on my computer which was something I installed to allow him access...I deleted that. I did a virus scan and turned on windows defender and did a scan with that. I checked my bank statement and other sites with money in my accounts and everything looks good thankfully.

That is MOST DEFINITELY a scam. Do not believe any pop ups saying you have a virus or anything like that. Norton will give you official messages when you do your scans to let you know if you have an actual virus. I really hope he did not get any malware into your computer while he was in there. Be careful ![](/Content/images/emotes/cry.gif)

Yes I did see that the virus blocker popped up when I closed out of the pop up. It could have been at the same time he was trying to install a virus on my computer when he realized I had figured out it was a scam. I have learned my lesson now.

Definitely a scam. I would be nervous about allowing anybody access to my computer. They could do anything without your permission once they get into your computer. Sorry this happened to you. One can never be too careful. Theread are a lot of scams out there.

After this I raised my security with Norton Antivirus to a higher level, turned on windows defender and did a full scan. Everything looks good.

It's definitely a scam. These people make you think there is something wrong with your pc so you will give them money. Never fall for it.

That is exactly what happened. Once I didn't want ti just hand over my money they would try to find my information on my computer since I let them have access to it. Man I was so dumb!

@shaggin You're not dumb, they are. It's sad that we have to be so distrusting of everyone because of people like them.

What you did there was kinda dangerous, these people are heartless once they get into your computer. Scammers out there are unbelievable, I think you need to back up your files just in case. One time my mom fell into a scammer who was going to scam her money, unfortunately it was too late when I realized it that I ask her to speak in our native language, she didn't respond back the same. It was close but we were glad she didn't fell for it, because I almost fell for it.

It is a scam. Don't do that again. Just run an anti-virus scan instead.
