Why must people abandon unwanted animals?

@andriaperry is feeding a stray kitten so I thought I'd tell you about the abandoned puppies we found on our travels. We had free-camped at a very small settlement and next morning driven a short distance to a dam which once supplied the town water. We were looking for native orchids.
As we drove into the parking area, Vin spotted a little pup sitting on the road. Then five more who were sleeping under some bush tumbled out to say hello. One little chap held back for a while but then toddled out as well. So we had seven puppies tumbling round our feet. There was no sign of the mother.
It was a Saturday; there was an agricultural show on at the nearest big town and no-one was answering their phones. At last we managed to contact a lady who organised for two young men to come out with a cage and we were assured the puppies would be cared for until they could be taken to a rescue centre. We had given them some diluted milk and crushed biscuits which they scoffed in no time flat.
They were well-behaved and would sit at our feet looking up at us and giving tiny little cries. They followed us while we looked for orchids and we kept counting heads to make sure we hadn't mislaid any. It was difficult not to bring them all home. I really think it is the pits to abandon young animals in this way.

I am not sure why it is easier to dump them by the side of the road than it is to drop them off at a shelter. The way the world is going, I think the domesticated dog will one day cease to exist. People seem to have less room for them in their lives and nowadays, they are being bred in puppy mills and there is so much interbreeding, that I doubt any breed of dog will long survive it.

Certainly puppy mills need to be abolished somehow. We have been surprised how many people are travelling with dogs and in a couple of cases, even with cats.

We have a really fantastic pound in our area, They do a really great job finding the animals homes and have a very good foster care system in place. I have been thinking about taking the kids by to volunteer their time just to be supportive of such a good system.

Here you have to pay $10 for each animal and they will tell you, if they do not get adopted they go to the gas chamber.

@andriaperry That might be okay if you own the animal but if you've just come across it somewhere it's a bit rough.

I cannot even begin to understand how people can abandon animals of any age like this. I'll shut up now. I am so glad that someone like you came across this little litter, kudos to you for doing what you did. Another tick for the good guys of this world :D

I would have taken them to the nearest vet or something, hopefully they were just lost, but if not better the vet have them than they starve or something. they are cute!

@JudyEv well that works, as long as someone was going to be sure something was done with them. I just dont get people, drive out of town and leave them at a vets office if you have too, dont just dump them!

@Jessicalynnt It's difficult to believe people could do this. They're probably very nice people to talk to which just makes it crazier.

makes ya wish ya could track down the original owners 'n smack 'em 'round a bit, don't 't? somebody recently dumped out a german shepherd lookin' pup here. he aint 's friendly 's the pups ya encountered, but seems to be covered'n fleas/ticks. we've been tryin' to con him with food so's we can tend to such 'fore they kill him. i've a call 'nto one 'f the rescues here to see if'n they'll take him. i'm pup poor 'n if'n he gets taken to the pound, he'll likely be put down.
i'm so glad to hear that y'all didn't give 'p 'n hopefully those pups'll find fere'er homes with lovin' families soon.

Darn, crap like this always brings out my cynical nature, but here we go:"People abandon animals for the same reason they abandon our fellow man who are less fortunate:"They're an inferior entity." Animals have it worst however because they can't communicate like we can, so no matter how much they suffer, cry, or howl, they go unnoticed, because what purpose do they serve those that are well off? A human however can recover from poverty by their own power, but what these privleged folks are never told is that such success isn't acquired alone.
To be blunt:"We live in a stupid world filled with stupid people who just. Don't. Get. It."

@Hanyouyomi That would be a great thing to do but a lot of hard work.

@JudyEv Yeah, this kinda why I've been bouncing around in my head of creating a shelter for homeless and abandoned pets to be cared for and looked after for the rest of their natural lives unless someone comes by wanting to adopt them. And it's gonna be more like a zoo in that regard of the pets living in personalized shelters where they're kept and fed, again unless someone comes by looking to adopt a pet.
But if I'm gonna do such a thing on the side, I need to brush up on my zoology...

Some people are cruel to abandon animals like that. They should take them to an animal shelter or try to give them away to friends.

It is cruelty to abandon animals period and irresponsible. God put them here to be loved and cared for as they give so much back to you with their loyalty and love. Those who abuse animals and abandon them will one day answer to God for certain!

It is so bad for those lovely puppies to be abandoned. I love pet dogs and cats. I hope they would soon find a good home for them to go to with good people. Thank you for finding help for the puppies.

I am going to believe that they will all find good homes. Surely someone will want them.
