This Heat is Costing us a Fortune!

I think everyone is experiencing a very hot summer this year. And it is a nice change for the unpredictable summers of the past couple of years where I had to bundle up at soccer games or melt in the rain. However, the heat is costing us a fortune. Our hydro bill is usually around $200. Our billing in Ontario is such that if you run big machinery like laundry or dishwashers during peak times (daytime when businesses are running) the rate is higher than if you use them after 7pm or on the weekends. There are actually 3 billing periods - Peak, Mid-Peak and Low-Peak. This is why I always do my laundry on the weekends and run the dishwasher after 7pm. They're pretty much the only things I can control. But with the air conditioning running non-stop for the last two months our hydro bill last month was almost $400 and was OVER $400 this past month. This is a little out of control, and to think they're going to be raising the rates! The weather isn't helping my health any either.

It's supposed to be rainy season here but its seems like its still summer. I agree, by the end of the month or comes the billing date, its double trouble -- undying summer heat plus nerve racking bill amount.

That's why I can't afford an AC . I've been dying with this heat wave. My hydro bill is $75-$150 apparently it will be going up shortly too.

We have similar power periods too. The weekends used to be a bit cheaper but now every day has the three periods. I put on a load of washing and run the dishwasher after 9pm. It's low-rate then till 7am.

I run the dryer for a few minutes and take out some clothes that I don't want to shrink or that I want wrinkle-free. I figure that saves some drying time and useage.

@patgalca That's a good idea. I hadn't really thought of doing that.

My daughter's boyfriend has been working on it. There have been some issues but we think it's finally been fixed.

I agree my bill last month was on the higher side of things as well with the nearly 20days of 80's and a house that half the time is warmer than it is outside in summer and the opposite in winter
