Jumping Spiders

I have just read a poem written by @crazyhorseladycx called While She Was Sleepin'... Her post reminded me of a time when we were in a scrap yard full of old cars in Oklahoma. I was peering into the shell of an old car looking at a huge spider's web with a spider in the centre. I got my camera out and my friend @sueznewz2 was peering over my shoulder to get a look at the spider and the web. I am not sure if you can see the spider in the photo, that is the actual one I took. My husband loves old cars. So our friends who we were staying with in Oklahoma took us to a car graveyard. Sue @sueznewz2 and I were peering at the large spider. As we leaned closer our American friend said "I hope its not one of them jumping spiders." Well Sue and I had never heard of jumping spiders, in fact it never occurred to us that spiders could jump. But I bet none of those jumping spiders could jump as far as @sueznewz2 did when our friend said that lol... Have you ever encountered spiders that can jump? The spider in the photo is bigger than a thumb it is not a little spider and the web was easily 2ft or more all round.

OOhhh maggs ... I remember it well..., lol... but both the web and the spider were big.., and I'd only ever seen brown spiders, so to see such a brightly coloured one was fascinating....until the word jump was mentioned lol.

Yes, I see the huge spider. Yes, I have encountered jumping spiders and hate them. You and your husband might enjoy these cars that I came across a few years ago.
My coincidence I was driving on Jarry Street in St. Leonard, Montreal, when I came upon this gold mine of vintage cars. I don't know much about cars but this...

@maggs224 Glad you liked it! I saw a jumping spider in my apartment a few days ago. He jumped and so did I.

You made me laugh, poor Sue, I think I would have done the same, jump away from the spider. I know that there are spiders capable of very agile jumps. I think she did the right thing to "jump" away.

@LadyDuck I think we were both safe Anna as I don't think that this spider was one of the jumping ones. Most of the ones I have seen on YouTube are much smaller that this big critter.

@Jessicalynnt It was huge Jessa, I had not seen one so brightly coloured before either. I love photographing insects, especially now I have a decent zoom. Before the zoom getting close enough was always a problem.

@crazyhorseladycx Sorry it has taken so long to respond been doing other things elsewhere. @sueznewz2 and I don't mind them in their habitat it is just when they come into ours. But the news that some of them can jump kind of freaked us both out a bit lol...

Only little ones... I think I'd be wary of moving to Australia, some of their spiders are not to be messed with... anywhere where you need to check for spiders before parking yourself on the throne in the wee room is best avoided!

@pgntwo There is a lot to be said for coming from our part of the world, Where our wildlife is concerned there is really nothing particularly dangerous unless you happen to have an allergy to something.

@maggs224 This is true. Except for the allergy I develop to water when it falls from the sky day after day after day....

@shaggin I am sure that you are right and this is not actually a jumping spider, and I am also sure that our friend knew this when he told us that some spiders can jump. Before he told us this we had no idea at all that any spider could jump. I looked it up on Youtube and like you say all the spiders that I saw on there that were jumping spiders were much smaller than this one.

I have heard of such species of spiders though I don't like being near those big spiders which are really scary.

@waflay Like you I am wary of the big spiders, but in reality it is often the smaller ones that are the most dangerous.

Haven't seen jumping spiders. But I saw some big spiders from big trees before. They are scary unlike house spiders.

@AkoPinay Apart from on YouTube I have not seen any jumping spiders either, and I can't say that I am sorry about that, as I would not like to be too close to a spider that can jump. Even if the jumping spiders are normally only small spiders

It is very scary to see a jumping spider for me because I have a phobia for spiders. They make me feel very uncomfortable if they are somewhere close to me.

@williamjisir66 I think it is one of the most common phobias, it is understandable too when a bite from even a small spider can do untold damage
