I offended someone today :(

I feel terrible about this. My man and his son went hiking today and we were kind of lost. We were trying to find the nature preserve down all these little dead end roads. I saw a family along the side of the road an older man and woman and a woman about my age. I asked if they knew where the place was. The man said "sorry?" and I thought he couldn't understand English very well as his accent was strong. I said oh you must not be from around here. The young girl said no we just did not hear you. I repeated the question and the man told me the directions and then said the accent is from here we have been here 28 years. I realized at that point I must have badly offended him and I feel terrible about it and was pretty embarrassed. It wasn't until we were done hiking a few hours later and driving home that I realized just how much I must have offended him. I remarked about it my man and he agreed and was like dumb founded by what I had said to the man.

It was not your intention to offend, he did not heard what you said and you thought he had not understood. Do not feel too depressed for this.

A lot of people with ascents should realize they are hard to understand. I know my manager at work has a thick accent, and hard to understand.

My man said when I said what I did that I should know that a lot of people in America have accents and that it wasn't that strong and he couldn't believe I said that and just turned his head away ... in disgust most likely. I always put my foot in my mouth when I talk :(

I hardly think that was an insult just saying that you didn't think he was local. I wouldn't beat myself up about it.

I wonder if I said "Oh you have an accent out loud" before that.. it was what I was thinking but I don't think it came out of my mouth. I never meant it as rude I just assumed they were vacationing or something and wouldn't know the area.

I definitely did not mean to hurt his feelings. Oh well I will try not to let it eat me up anymore especially since I doubt I will ever see him again nor would we remember each other if we did.

I am sure it wasn't as bad as you think it was. If their accebtvwas hard to understand like you stated then I am getting it happens a lot more then you think. My college has a lot of foreign people and we have to ask them several times to repeat what they said and they have to do it for us as well. As long as you were polite about it that is what matters.

It happens sometimes. It is hard to not offend people at one time or another. Don't beat yourself up about it. You know now it was a mistake so don't let it bother you. You meant no harm.

Thank you so much you are exactly right. I need to stop letting this eat me up. The people I offended probably have already gotten over it.

@toniganzon I do agree if we didn't mean to do it we don't have to feel bad. That makes a lot of sense but I just beat myself up over everything!

@shaggin I read something about offending someone yesterday and learned that you don't have to feel sorry for it.

Hon, if the man's accent was not the same as your accent and you have lived in that area your whole life, then I would have ask where he came from. He must still carry his boyhood accent with him. Did the girl have the same type of accent the man had? If not, then I would have pointed out how much easier it was for you to understand her than it was for you to understand him. He should have been used to people saying that unless he never spoke to anyone new.

The girl did not have an accent at all. My guess is she was born in America. I think I am done feeling guilty about this now finally.
