Are You Swayed by Sob Stories?

This morning, I dropped by the house of a relative to collect the payment for his debt some years ago. He promised to pay a portion of it today, but instead of having it, I went home feeling down seeing their situation. Her wife told me her daughters have not yet received their salaries, and that they also had to shell out some money to help their cousins go to school because the father was hooked in illegal drugs. So instead f paying me, they promised to pay as soon as they received their salaries. I understoodd them, and knew they were telling the truth. So instead of getting angry, I felt pity for them. I went home wishing we could also help the children with some school allowance when my husband receives his job retirement pay.

It's scary to be on that side of the sob story.

That is a hard predicament to be in but I would have done the same as you did. I always seem to be a sucker for a good sob story.

@acelawrites I do but it can get me in trouble sometimes as there seems like there is always someone who will try and take advantage of you.

@simone10 yes, there are people who try to abuse the kindness and we should know and avoid them.

Yes, I could not be so strong to resist having pity when confronted with such situations. Glad to know you have a kind heart.

Let me give it to you for being so understanding. I wouldn't want to be on the other side of that sob story. I prefer to be able to give assistance than to be the one asking assistance. Having said that, I feel bad when I hear sob stories like this and more often than not, I just accept that the money owed to me won't be repaid as such but it will be repaid in another more meaningful way.

You are very optimistic @acelawrites . Can't blame you as that is a significant amount. Hopefully, you get paid back and your blessings increase ten-fold.

I know they will also pay someday when they are capable of paying; they are just waiting for another son to finish college this March. It's a big sum, and it was loaned from us in 2013; P120T.

Most people in our country were swerved by them, I mean most tex voted operated contests on TV were dominated by people with the best sob stories.

Yes, because Filipinos are so easy to be swayed; so emotional sometimes and so kind.

Yes, and I understand their situation and I know they are telling the truth. It's just money, we can still find it but not the lost relationships.

I also experienced it many times, until now I am not paid for those who borrowed money from me , so big money almost 85,000 pesos 4 persons borrower with thick face.I am always a victim of my kindness. Is it a sin too, to be so nice? I think not, but it makes us bad .lol.

Yes, it depends on the people we lent the money; if they were liars, we have to show we are angry of their deeds because they made false promises to return what they borrowed; more so because it is hard-earned money.

Thanks, DianneN. Yes, because I think I am more fortunate than them financially; and it is my way of thanking God for that blessing, to be kind to those who really needs help depending on my capacity to help.

It is a sad situation. As for my believing sob stories, it depends on who's telling it. I don't believe everything I hear.

Only people with a good level of empathy are able to react in a way you did. I don't know how i would've reacted if I were in your situation, but you did, and are willing to do an admirable thing. :-)

Thank you. It was because I understand their situation and I am still thankful, my family did not have to go all through that situation.
