So we begin another round of potential jury duty...

In our little county - which is the only place I've ever heard of this - you are a potential juror for a year. Yes, I know, that's not how works other places. He was on a case in early summer and got his 'paycheck' for it and we thought maybe that was the end of it. Last week we got a letter that started out by thanking him ...which led to the other foot dropping. He has to call the special phone number this evening to find out if he has to report again. This could go on for weeks, which it did the last time. It will either end in him not having to report or spending another day in court so to speak. After this go-around there will be two more until his year is over. The last county we lived in he got called, went for the orientation and was never called again....over and done. Oh well, he'll survive and if he gets on a case he'll earn a whopping eighteen bucks and I'll get a day alone. Photo: pixabay.com/en/scales-law-justice-balance-weight-303434/

It use to be for the longest time, that once you registered to vote, you got on the list of being a potential juror. When I turned 18, I registered to vote and it seemed immediately I was called to be a potential juror. I had to write them and say I was not available because it was true. I had just graduated from High School and was in College in another town. After marrying, I have been called many times. I served on a Jury & a Grand Jury. Then , in the past 5 years or so, they said they would not be picking jurors from voter registration rolls. I think they are picking it from the phone book now. Ever since this change, I have not been called.

@akalinus I see. I live in Georgia and I really am glad they quit using Voter Registration lists, because I was called more than some voters.

It has nothing to do with voter registration in this state. I think its vehicle registration like @akalinus said.

I think that in Florida, they take it off the DMV rolls. If you drive a car in Florida, you could be called.

That is really unfair. You can't really make plans for a year. How do employers deal with this? You can't keep letting staff members go like that especially if it is a small company.

Most of the people in this county are either retired, work for themselves (farmers) or unemployed.

Yes it is, and I don't think it's fair. If you get on a case and see it to the end, that should be the end.

It must make it awfully hard to make plans. You can't go on a trip or anything because you never know when you have to report. Will the year be the end of it?

It will end next March. If we had a vacation planned we would have to let them know and they would make concessions.
