Being Honest Should Not Be Shocking

We were at Walmart today and as we were walking out after paying for our order, I noticed a small package of boullion has slipped down and not been added to our order. I picked it out of the carriage and went to a register to pay for it. The clerk had seen us go by with our carriage and seen me come over. He was shocked that I wanted to pay them. Shocked? Why is honesty shocking? Shouldn't everyone be honest? Well I guess I live in a fantasy world, no most people are not honest he told me. My response was I like to treat even a company like I wanted to be treated. I don't want you to cheat me and I won't cheat you. I was sad that he thought I was the exception not the rule. I like to think that most people are honest and would have done the same thing I did. What do you think? Are most people honest?

I think the answer to your question ("why is honesty shocking?") can be summed up in one word: Walmart. You were at Walmart. To me that answers everything. I was a manager at Walmart for 7 years, and you wouldn't believe how much theft occurred and how dishonest all the customers were. It's like Walmart attracts the worst of the worst of society (I'm not saying everyone who shops there is bad, but hopefully you get what I'm saying). You just see so much dishonesty when you're working there that you just become numb to it. Then, when someone like you comes along and displays an ounce of honesty, it shocks them because they are not used to seeing that at all!

Not all the customers are like that. We took the soda in and paid for it.

@akalinus I know that not all customers are like that, but you wouldn't believe how many are! It's quite depressing.

It's rather sad that it's judged exceptional to be honest. Lovely begonia - is it yours?

I hope most people are as honest as you. I've done the same as you, but I think some people would like to get away with anything that they think is free.

It does seem that many people would consider this a gift from heaven, like God would steal from one person to give to another, he is God not Robin Hood!!

I have done the opposite. I have paid for things and didn't put them in my cart and if I realize it before I leave the parking lot I will go in to the register and get it. They are aware of what I did. Other times I will just leave it as I don't feel like going back in to get it if it is inexpensive.

That's the problem, the shock of seeing an honest man is like admitting we are a society where most of it are not honest.

Geez I need my eyes checked. I thought you said the clerk had seen you go by with your "carnage." Now THAT shocked me. Anyway, strangely enough I think most people would do just what you did. I guess the clerk has had some bad experiences. Those flowers are so pretty!

We came out of Walmart and were looking at the receipt. We noticed that the cashier did not charge for two packs of soda. We took them back in and ran them through the checkout again. We thought it was the decent thing to do even though we did not have to. I always told my kids that cheating others will bring bad things into our lives. It must have stuck because my son with me agreed that we needed to go pay for the soda.

It is great when we can pass this on to our children, isn't it. I am sure all of my children would do the same thing, we do talk about how disconcerting it is to clerks when wee try to tell them to charge us more lol

@BelleStarr I used the example of the free sausages we got from a malfunctioning vending machine while on a trip. The sausages kept tumbling out of the machine and onto the floor. We figured that if we did not get them, someone else would. So we took a bunch. Wrong decision. Later, towards evening, we had a flat tire in rush hour traffic in Omaha. We had to unload a bunch of stuff to find the tire and jack. Somehow, we lost a sleeping bag as well. The sausages cost us a lot.

Personally, l`d not have taken it back,l do not want the stares and having to explain myself. Some years back, same thing happened to me,l did not take it back, l did not want to explain how it got there but l was so ashamed and scared on my way home,l kept looking at my back to make sure cops were not following me. It might have been a $1.50 coffee creamer but l felt so bad.

@BelleStarr A lot of people don't realize if one lies too much, he/she will eventually cannot know the truth, and lies either hurt themselves or others. Oh, and most people will forgive the liar if he or she fesses up. So "Honesty is the Best Policy," baby!

I think "YES". In my country, India, people say that it rains as there are still some honest people left on earth....its just a saying but coming to think of it spiritually, I hope it might be true. As for me, I have done it many times, even last month, while purchasing some cosmetic and accessories for my daughter, picked a ring which was fully covered with stones (a beautiful one), in order to keep it safe...i did not put it in the shopping bag but just put it in little finger so that it could remain intact. Later when billing forgot to give it for billing and realized it only when I was about to leave the shop....then I immediately went to them and said sorry and stuffs....they did not speak a word about it but were strangely looking at me as though I have committed a crime of returning it for billing ... that is how people are now-a-days I suppose. We have to just follow our conscience, the rest rests in God's hand, even if no one else watches...I know that our God is watching our every move. Sometimes, when my shop with my daughter, she has to open the chips packet and eat it immediately before even billing it, which she does sometimes, but I make sure that I carry the empty packet and bill it by which I am satisfied that I made sure that my daughter follows the same every time in every situation of her life
