I wonder why they couldn't do anything, seems like maybe a manager should have that authority. It ends up costing all of us since they will raise prices to cover such loses.

It depends on what crime is being committed

I would see people in walmart have stuff on the bottom rack of their cart and the checkout person couldn't see it, and the customer wouldn't retrieve it and would walk out with the stuff untouched. I doubt they rang it up at all. It made me mad, but what could I say to point it out without making a big scene?
Now I acquired some butter the other day when a shopper forgot to put it in their car and it fell off their back bumper. I tried to chase them across the lot, waving my arms and they didn't look once. So there was not much to do but keep it. I gave it to my mother since I can't eat butter. People need to pay more attention.

@jasonhack Everyone is tired. Everyone is busy. And everyone tunes out the world around them because their thoughts are the most important thing going on.

That does not seem normal at all. At my store, we have rules we have to follow. If we see someone stealing, we can't say anything to them until they leave the register and are trying to go out the door without paying. Also, if we see them put something in their pocket or handbag, we have to keep our eyes on them. If we lose sight of them, we can't say anything because we don't know for certain if they put the item back. It's crazy.

All businesses are worried about being sued.

@sherryericha Exactly. It's sad. If we catch a black person stealing, they won't let us say anything at all. It's frustrating. I don't care what color somebody is. If you're stealing, you're stealing. We shouldn't be letting crooks walk all over us because WE'RE afraid of getting in trouble. It's not right.

Why could he not tell her to dump all that is in the purse out on the counter to see. It is not right to steal from people. People here steal bikes and break into homes and take things. Those were right to do.

Ha ? You told an employee of the store and said that ? Oh my , what an irresponsible employee .
They could have inspected her bag right away since you already told her .
Well, some have the ailment of being a kleptomia , so they steal and it's an abnormality . . But as to others who don't have that ailment , it is also not normal because they know that it is bad to steal .
