Bunked my duty

Yes today i bunked my duty.I didn't want to bunk but i had to,actually i got some other important task to do due to which i couldn't go to office.Moreover i have exceeded the leave limit,so that i couldn't take leave aswell.
I bunked by informing my boss that i am moving out to field for some official's inspection purpose,so i shall not be come to office and doing my duty at field level.
What you do if some such situation arises in front of you?

Normally I just call in sick. That makes more sense because one can fall sick in the line of duty.
