Opposite of Internet Troll

I spend time on a forum of mothers. Some groups within that forum consist of women who post their problems. A lot of other women will "pile on" and basically attack that woman and point out what she has done wrong to cause her situation. Another thing that happens is people make up problems to post, and the the people who respond to these posts call them out as Trolls. Within all that misery there are a few posters who are always responding to the troubled people with caring and with helpful suggestions. They never get caught up in the cruel arguments. I admire the people who can continuously be in that forum and yet always remain kind and helpful. Why am I there? Well, there is another group on that forum where moms basically just socialize. Why do I know about the other group? I can't stop myself from reading that silliness sometimes. And that 's when I see those kind helpful people maintaining their composure at all times.

I also admire people like that as they are usually very comfortable in their own skin and do not need to pick on the ones making up problems so they are just kind' and helpful to all.

Precisely! It's sometimes called "self-love," and it's very different from "conceit."

@paigea - Busy bees cannot afford to get bee-hinder, so they check out stuff and sort the flower pollen from the dust of it all. (Trolls give off lots of dust, don't they?) -Gus-

I never understand why some people are so cruel and judgmental. i try to be kind when i am responding to people who are obviously there because they are either seeking advice or simply comfort.

I think it is very sad when people pick on someone. It is a packlike mentality - survival of the strongest or something and let's attack the weakest. One reason I'm not on FB.

@paigea I don't see either but maybe it makes them feel strong - or right - or something. It's despicable behaviour really.

That's one of the harsh things about the Internet. People use it for the wrong reasons and they lie about things. It's frustrating.

Drama everywhere I guess! I even see this happening on Facebook. It is interesting to see the different personalities you will encounter . . . some will be on completely opposite ends of the pole! I tend to stay out of the drama - but then again I can't stop from reading it either - I am a lurker .

@paigea Oh yah, I'm sure there are plenty of "those" waiting to jump in to get their moment. Perhaps they feel empowered because they are anonymously online - but it's a stinky thing to do. I have more respect for those who have more productive things to say.

I stay out of the drama. I do admit to reading it sometimes, but not for long. I find it troubling that there are so many who just want to stir the pot.

While it seems sort of odd for people to make up problems to share, I suppose it's not any different in real life where people will make their situation out to be worse than it is because they need attention or for some other reason. But, I don't see how anyone can assume which people are doing that or which ones are for real or totally making something up out of the blue. I'm glad you have another place to socialize. Just thought I'd say that I would have missed this post since I just saw your other more recent one a few days ago and you usually don't write this often. I happened upon this one while checking out another member here.

@paigea OK, here I am, ready to MyLot a bit. But it could be argued that I have a life. Maybe trolls do other stuff. I have no idea. My day: No time for morning MyLot post. Clinical meeting at 10 AM. Do three progress notes until about 12:30. Throw together some Kun Pao Chicken. Dentist appointment at 1:30 PM. Kid Client at 3:30 PM. Pick up medications related to oral surgery tomorrow until 8 PM. Get visited by my neighbor kid friend until 8:30 PM. Chat with Indian neighbor friend who brings me some Northern Indian food until about 9:15. Talk on phone with preschool director (where I grow stuff in Berkeley) about her frustrations, my schedule for next two weeks, and other random things until about 10:30 PM. 10:35: Throw together MyLot post about something that happened last night.10:45 until 11:15: Do two more progress notes. 11:30: ready to troll on MyLot at will! How much does one have to write to be a "troll"?

@TheHorse I guess it can be done in very little time. But to really stir things up, the troll often keeps arguing with any who disagrees or tries to defend the one being "attacked" It turns into a longer mess than I could want to spend time reading

Sometimes it is healthy to just chat and be a bit "silly." It helps to take our minds off other problems. I'm sorry that some people choose to be so judgemental of others.

Forums like that just have no purpose but TO help people. Commisserate, toss around ideas, etc. It's funny how things take a turn towards drama no matter what the forum. And yeh you do find yourself reading it, it's curiosity
