A New Part of Our Lives

Sasha, at age 12

I have an older dog. Sasha will be 14 in October. We have had her since she was 8 weeks old. When she was 2 she started to go lame in one of her rear knees. We had it looked at, and long story short, opted for surgery, a tplo. A tplo, tibial-plateau-leveling osteotomy, is a surgery performed on dogs to stabilize the stifle joint after ruptures of the cranial cruciate ligament (analogous to the anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] in humans, and sometimes colloquially called the same). The vet who did the surgery told us that over 50% of dogs who have the issue in one leg will need surgery in the other rear leg. That was Sasha. So we had both back legs done. She is my $10,000 dog. The same vet told us that she would probably develop severe arthritis in those knees when she got older. Again, he was correct. About 2 weeks ago, she stopped putting weight on the left rear leg. After some xrays, and lots of meds, she is hobbling around a bit better. But we are taking turns sleeping downstairs with her as she can't manage the stairs any longer. I love her tremendously. She is he best dog in the world and I tell her so regularly. I am a published poet and I have a poetry blog. Here is a poem I posted on it about this time with my dog Blunted i am stuck in sadness its teeth sharper than i recall its fear an ooze that seeps liquids never run-- they fade leaving stains brown and red in the sun copyright/all rights reserved Audrey Howitt 2016

Your post brings sadness to my eyes. Such devotion. Love forges a better life for all and yet it deeply carves pain in our hearts in the end. Our Sally is working on 7 now. Hard to believe that just yesterday she was a little blue guinea pig pup. Lovely poem. I,too, dabble in poetry.

It is hard when you love--the loss, even an impending loss, is painful-- Thank you for your kind words!

@divalounger I had expected to share life for another 4 years with our last two kitty cats. I'm not God. Pain and cancer pushed me into giving them the ultimate gift, release from pain and misery. I protect my fur persons until the end. I do not let them go to the Light alone. You take care.

My heart is breaking for you and your dog. They are like children and when they don't feel good, we don't either, we worry and fret. Your poem gave me goose bumps...painful!

Thanks Marilyn--she is up and limping around today--she went out and did some doggie things this morning and is feeling a bit happier--so I have my fingers crossed and am hoping that we still have some time

The poor dog I feel so sad for him. My mother had a dog that got that bad and it could not go up and down the stairs anymore. Her washer and dryer were down stairs and she carried the dog back up the stairs every time she went down.

The grief expressed in your poem is the price we pay for loving our pets so much.

@divalounger No, stuff like this hurts. It's equivalent to riping out my heart and torching it right in front of me.

I feel your pain. I love my dogs so much that I took them both on holiday with me. They are older too and rescue dogs. My little one is 10 years old and blind and the other one is 8 years but scared of everything as she was an extreme cruelty case but I wouldn't be without either of them. I wish the very best for yours and send lots of healing thoughts,

I wish I could say something that could console you but there is nothing anyone can say but I am so very sorry you're going through this. You're so very considerate not to let her sleep all by herself. It is always so sad when they begin to have problems as they age. I've lost 2 that had heart related issues, one was 15 the other was 12.

As the pet mom of a 14-year-old dog, I totally understand where you are coming from. It is heart wrenching to go through this with them.

OUr dogs become such a big part of our lives and bring us so much joy. It is very hard to see them get older, ours lost his hearing before he passed, it was so hard to watch him in such confusion

Yumove tablets, a shellfish extract, help our 13-year old Labrador Retriever - but he gave up on stairs about a year ago, and getting up into the car before that. He is now going deaf too - but he still loves his food. Interesting poem.

It sounds familiar--you must be getting glucosamine from the shell-fish??? We also give her fish oil and that helps--thank you! and good luck to you as well!

It is a shame when dogs get old and start having all these problems. And you're right - sadness does have teeth.

She is very sweet! I am hoping that even with her arthritis that she gets enough "doggie" things to do to keep her happy!

Poor Sasha. I hope she feels better. I'll be praying for her. Cherish every moment with her. Nice work with the poem.
