Have you ever carried a pocket knife?

When I was a kid, I usually carried a pocket knife around with me. My friends and I would play a game called mumbley-peg, which involved doing a sequence of "tricks" with our knives, each of which ended with the knife stuck in the ground. As I was researching "mumbley-peg," mostly to get the spelling right, I learned that it was a popular game among school children in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, but has since waned in popularity with the increase in concern about child safety. I also hadn't remembered that it's mentioned in either Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer. We played it in the 1970s and never thought much about its "history." Anyway, as an adult, I have sometimes carried a pocket knife, then lost it, then bought another one years later. So it's been a part of my "pattern" SOME of the time. Right now, I have one that I bought a couple of years ago, and it really does come in handy now and then. I use it to cut off dead branches from my garden plants, to dig waterlogged particle board out of the speakers I refinish, and to cut plastic model airplane parts out neatly when I make model airplanes with my kid clients. Have you ever carried a pocket knife? What do, or did, you mostly use it for? The picture is of me using my current $10 pocket knife to reduce a corner bulge in the speakers I'm restoring.

I used to always have swiss army knife (dad would borrow, lose and have to buy me another, or I could have his better one and he'd get a newer one). Then I got a leatherman, better knife, but the wieght! Works best in a bugout bag, would carry the swiss

I have to remember to take mine out of my picket when I fly. But other than that, I usually carry it. I don't think my dad carried one.

I think you could get arrested for carrying such a knife around in your pocket in the UK nowadays.

@TheHorse Not quite. I've checked the guidelines, and that might be legal (can't see how long it is; 3" is the max allowed to carry a folding knife around in public without a "good reason").
The laws on buying and carrying a knife depend on the type of knife, your age and your circumstances

@egdcltd I should measure the blade on this thing. My guess is a that it's a touch less than 3".

I used to carry a pocket knife when I lived alone and was younger as I live in a neighborhood with a very high crime rate. I don't feel the need to do that anymore as I don't have to go anywhere alone that often.

I never thought of this thing as a means of self defense, though maybe it would work if I wielded it and looked real crazy. What city were you in where there was a high crime rate?

@MissNikki I always think of Canada as having a much lower crime rate than we do in the US.

I carry a pocket knife and pepper spray with me anytime I go out. Specially at night and it is just me and one of my friends. My college town is pretty safe and the crime rate is extremely low, but you can never be to safe.

I never thought of my little knives as self defense. But pepper spray is a good idea. What college town are you in?

It's unbelievable how many female college students I meet here in Gainesville at the University of Florida who go out jogging or walking at night, and don't take along a friend with them, nor carry a knife or pepper spray. Our city is pretty safe also, but that doesn't mean bad things don't happen. I'm always telling people I meet to carry pepper spray for protection.

I used to be the proud owner of one of those Swiss pocket knives with multiple blades. Some day, I donĀ“t know when, I lost it. I think that someone stole it.

Oh, I remember those! They were all the rage for awhile. I think the bigger ones even had a cork screw in them.

After my parents' murder, I carried a pocket knife almost everywhere but never took it out of my bag. But stopped carrying them when I entered the university.

@TheHorse one out of five people who actually abducted them is in prison now but the master mind of the killing remains unknown though we have an idea who.

I never did but my brothers always did and we used to throw them into the ground close to each others feet to test our skill. Hubs still carries a pocket knife.

@TheHorse Yep, and did you play "stretch" we would throw the knife and you had to move your foot until you were almost split in two lol

Yep, we called that "Chicken." If you move your feet, you lose. But if you are the thrower, and your knife doesn't stick in the ground, or if you nail someone, you lose too.

I usually use a neck knife - one that has a sheath and hangs around my neck - because I don't always have adequate pockets.

Growing up an avid hunter and fisherman, I would never go anywhere without my pocket knife. Although I don't carry one with me all the time now, I do have a nice Buck knife that I like to use from time to time!

When I was a kid. Primarily we used to try to throw it as close to the other guy's foot as we could, and it had to stick or you were out.
