i have check engine light on in my car

I have a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle and have had a check engine light for more than 2 years...Volkswagen told me it would cost more than $600. to fix this. I asked what would happen if I didn't get it fixed. The reply was that someday it wouldn't start...2 years plus later it still runs and runs and runs. Dennis

Other than checking the engine yourself..take it to a care repair they can tell you. Though sometimes they just come on for no reason..I had a Nissan pickup and the check engine light was on and they couldn't get it off even after it was serviced..was just a glitch in the system. Still better to take it in and check it out though.
