Don't Mention The War

I said it once but I think I got away with it. Could it be 41 years ago when The Germans was screened, one of twelve iconic and hilarious episodes staring John Cleese, Prunella Scales and Connie Booth. The Germans is one of my favourite episodes when Basil Fawlty (John Cleese) has the Germans visiting his hotel in Torquay, Devon. Where he tells them some home truths about Germany and how they lost the war. Including the famous goose step march he imitates and the immortal lines. Basil: Is there something wrong? Elder Herr: Will you stop talking about the war? Basil: Me! You started it! Elder Herr: We did not start it! Basil: Yes you did — you invaded Poland. Even after forty years the Germans is still being repeated on Sky, just proves just how good British comedy really is and how it is still watched and enjoyed by audiences all over the world time and time again. Don't forget the Colditz Salad!

We've all educated my grandchildren from an early age to enjoy British comedy. One in particular loves Morecambe and Wise, The Two Ronnies, anything with Ronnie Barker and many other old comedies. It's a shame there are no new comedians and comedies that can reach the high standards these set.

They don't like it to be mentioned.
