Should I proceed with Medicine after Medical Technology?

Philippines
August 29, 2016 6:39am CST
I just transferred from a university to a medical school. And only a few subjects were given credit so I went back to starting college all over again. It wold take me a long time to finish my degree and I'm having second thoughts if I would still go through medicine afterwards. Any thoughts about it?

Why shouldn't you? Though it's really going to take a very long time. My sister took medical technology in college then after graduating she took the board exam and passed. Then she went to a medical school and then after graduating she took her specialisation. I know it took her more than ten years including taking the medical board exam.

Wow. I really admire doctors. The determination for finishing their studies is just, wow. One of the reasons why I'm planning on proceeding :)

What are your reservations about medical school? I have a friend who almost quit medical school several times but now she is a doctor and all her sacrifices paid off. It would depend on how bad you want it and what prices you are willing to pay for to achieve your goal.

"What if I don't pass?" that's the big question I ask myself every time I think about medicine. I'm having these doubts about myself when it comes to my studies. I can't keep my focus 24/7. I get distracted easily. It's going to take me a while if I pursue it.

@thereselao I pray that you make the right decision whatever your decision may be. I understand it is difficult as you are at a point where you are questioning your abilities. Just believe in your decision and have no regrets about it.

It is your life and it depends on how much you want that career. How dedicated you are to going into medicine. You could go into nursing or something that is less time consuming too.

@thereselao ......Well, I am sure you will do well. Knowing what direction you are headed is half the issue.

Nursing was my other option if not medical technology. And being partly determined in proceeding, I picked the latter.

No I haven't reached halfway yet. I just transferred this year to Medical Technology and I'm back to first year. And no, I can't turn back now. My parents are set on me finishing my degree.

I think you should. You would not want to look back later in life and wish that you had done things differently. It is a lot of hard work but we'll worth it. Wishing you all the best.

BS in Medical Technology (BSMT), also known as as Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science, is a four year degree program that equips students with knowledge and skills in laboratory tests used in the detection, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases. The program consists of general education subjects (such as English and Filipino) and professional subjects (such as Clinical Chemistry and Blood Banking). You will be taught on how to collect, preserve and analyze specimens such as blood, urine, cells and tissues as well as the preparation of reagents (compounds or substances added to a specimen in order to create a chemical reaction) and stains (a discoloration made by a foreign matter) . The program will also train you on how to use modern equipments, instruments and scientific methods to provide accurate laboratory results. I got this from finduniversity.ph haha :)

If it's really what you want in life, the years, the months, and the days will just be part of the journey. Therefore, I would like to suggest that you truly evaluate what you truly want in a family perspective, career perspective, financial perspective, and probably personal perspective. If you think of other better ways like starting your business and start building your future, then make the decision. If in your heart, it's something you want to do for the rest of your life, decide and stick to it.

I'm actually determined in finishing medical technology. Though our adviser keeps on pointing out that we won't pass. Gr. I'll show her who won't pass.
