What smartphone to consider for photo purposes?

I'm thinking purchasing a new smartphone, with better photo capabilities than my current Samsung S4 Mini, which is pretty good for everything else, but tends to be sluggish when focusing, especially at fast moving subjects. I've tested the iPhone 5S and SE, which are really great, outperforming about anything on Android in their price range. However, I'd prefer sticking to Android, due to the broader range of available apps and increased customization possibilities. While I'd love a new Samsung S7 (used a Galaxy Young, a S3 and S4 Mini in the past 4 years), it's quite outside of my budget... but I can't say I found any cheaper alternatives on Android yet. Maybe if you could share some of your experiences? Any hints would be appreciated.

I have a really cheap android phone through straighttalk and the photo quality is terrible. The camera on my ipod touch is excellent. I hope you find a good one at a good price!

So from what you describe the performance of Apple devices is clearly better. This is what I noticed, as well, at least in what concerns fast-moving objects. For still subjects, slower focusing speed isn't a concern, but for fast ones, it becomes an issue.

From the reviews, when it comes to camera phones, Nokia Lumia is still the best. 41 megapixels for the camera is quite impressive. I am not sure though if it still uses Android as it might be using Windows now that Nokia has been bought by Microsoft.

I'm certain the Lumia range is running Windows 10 (at least all current models) :)

Looking for a smartphone with good camera, I recommend Samsung Galaxy E7.

I have a Motorola X and I don't care for the photo quality of the camera. I know some people only use their phones as a way to take pictures, but I prefer to use a really camera. I enjoy using my Canon Rebel T5 a lot more than my phone camera. To me the pictures are always better.

You are right about this, @CaseyRoss9966, but my issue is that I'd want something more discrete. I've lugged my DSLR for some 5 years now; in the process, I realized that sometimes a chunky camera can draw too much attention onto yourself. So either you can get bullied for taking pictures in the wrong spot (worst-case scenario), or your subjects will start acting rigidly and losing any spontaneity as they see you with your camera. A fast smartphone is a better tool for the urban environment, as long as you don't want to take portrait shots.

Thanks, I should really test it. Hope it's faster than the Z3, though :) (I found it significantly slower than the iPhone 5S)

Thanks! I've heard more positive opinions of the Sony Z5 by now, so I definitely need to test one out :).

I myself prefer the iPhone 6s over the S7 whent it comes to photography. The S7 is really great but I don't feel like his camera takes shots like they really are in real life.
