The Squatters Are Gone

My daughter-in-law inherited a home from her grandfather, but squatters had moved into it and been living there since she was a child. Our state has a squatter's law that gives possession of a home to the squatters if they have been living there for 7 years without the owner taking possession of the home and evicting them during that time. They had to go to court and get a judgement against that family in order for her to take possession of her house. They gave the family many months to find somewhere else to stay.
I'm not sure how it went, whether the family found themselves a new home or if the law had to force them to leave. But they are out and my son and daughter-in-law are going to remodel the house and live there when he gets out of the service. I am thrilled because it is not that far from where I live.

This is becoming more of a problem. In Florida, service members come home and find someone living in their house. It is hell trying to get them out.
Some scammers are renting out houses to people. The only trouble is that they don't own the house and sometimes have never been in it. People come from the north and find people living in their house.

@CinnamonGrl It is hard to get people out, even renters who don't pay.

This 'squatter' law has me baffled. While you can't evict them from your property, taxes have to be paid. Who pays the property tax? The owner or the squatter? If the owner has to pay the taxes, the squatter law should be unconstitutional. Do you believe, for one minute, that the squatter pays the property taxes??? I very much doubt it! Something's wrong with this 'picture'...

I totally agree. There don't seem to be any laws protecting the property owners, even if they are paying the taxes. It should be unconstitutional.

It is said that possession is 9/10 of the law. Whoever said that is right when it comes to squatters!

@clrumfelt What hurts is breach of trust.
I know of cases where property is let out and then squatters become the owners! siva

She is in South Carolina right now and he's stationed in Bahrain but I'm glad they will have their own place to come home to.

Oh, thankfully that the court found favor towards your daughter-in-law and son! I do hope with you that peace, safety and goodness will follow them all their days as they settle in.

Yes now they get to start remodeling. I think she will want it to be like she remembered growing up when her grandparents lived there.
